339 Car Insurance in the UK

Does anyone have their car insured with a UK company to drive in Italy. I am looking for more than the 30 days offered with a Green Card as I will be living in Naples for a few years but returning to the UK.

we used a company in wales that offers quotes for uk registered cars called

stuart collins http://www.stuartcollins.co.uk they are brokers

did it all via internet and they were helpful and efficient

we have a years green card... but it is only third party cover....

which if you consider italian insurance anyway this is more or less the norm here..... however if you mention being naples based it could lead to problems.... and hopefully your car is not a desirable model

It's not possible to drive a UK registered vehicle in Italy for "several years" especially if one is an Italian resident. This is why insurers have limitations on how long one can drive in another European country before cover lapses.

If you intend to be in Italy for more than a year, you should get your car re-registered in Italy, although this wil be expensive. It's probably better to sell the UK car and buy on in Italy, after all it makes life easier if the car is LHD and after three or four years will you want to bring your car back to the UK anyway?

If you want a fully comprehensive policy with good european cover *for visits* then I recommend Footman James. We insure a UK registered car with them and it is fine for multiple visits to Italy (in fact anywhere in EFTA) provided that no one visit exceeds 30 days.

Many thanks to all those who replied. I have discovered that I cannot get insurance from a UK company unless I retain UK registration of my cars. So as to avoid UK tax and MOTs I am going to register my cars in Italy and obtain 3rd party cover whilst in Naples. I have insured the value of the cars with a UK insurance company Alexander Forbes. However, it is all very expensive but cheaper than selling my cars at a loss.
