General chat about Italy

Ah, I saw the communist "No" posters etc., but wasn't sure what it was all about. Can you elaborate, please? :)

This must relate to the pile of paperwork I received from the Embassy last week?

Was wondering what that was about...

Exit polls have just said that "No" wins

Notaio/ Adriatica,

Can you please fill us in on what the referendum is all about?

the referendum was initiated under the last government because of the northen league and its support for that government...its a watered down version of what thay wanted...virtual independance...

the parts at stake are major changes to the second part of the italian constitution, reducing the seats in both houses of parliament by 20 per cent ...letting the regions take control of spending in the areas of infrastructure , hospitals and schools and many other things...

its totally opposed by most of the left particularily the far left and supported by most of the right...

luckily its not a quorum vote so 50 per cent plus one of the votes cast will be enough to win the case... either way...

there are many other issues involved... and its a big step as it will break some of the rules that have been inhibiting law making in italy due to the complete farce of batting discusions between the two house for years on end before anything can be changed... it will remove most of the power from the president... the prime minister will have more power .... and will get rid of most life time senators... in essence it is a attempt to renew the constitution designed 60 years ago in a more modern way without the fear of dictators and monarchs hanging around and should provide a freer more open goverment and lead the way i think to the amalgamation of all the stupid little parties here under two or three different leaders that will then be elected or run as prime ministers split...left , right

brief summary.. i would have voted yes

got to go out... notary may well give an opposing or less supportive take on the whole thing

notaio is right the No vote won.....

no change, of the 53 % or so that voted around 60 % voted no... north more or less 50 50 but even there apart from lombardy and veneto the no vote was ahed...and as you moved south central vote about 30 70 split and south 25 - 75
