746 Airconditioning advice

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any advice on aircon units please? We're looking to buy some good mobile, not fixed, airconditioning units that will (hopefully) work back in the UK. Does anyone know of any good brands and shops where we can buy them from, and also the price we can expect to pay? We're based in Treviso, Veneto. So far I've only been able to compare what I've seen in SME in Susegana to the UK B&Q website! Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

After the recent heat wave we are also considering buying and air con unit, we are only in the looking stage i.e. looking at prices etc, we have one advantage my husband is an aircon specialist so he knows the theory. The advantage of mobile units are that you can move them from room to room but the disadvantage is where do you put the discharge pipe? Through an open window? not that convenient if you are trying to keep out the warm air and mozzies. The most important thing to look for if you wish to use it in the bedroom is the noise level (db's) the cheaper the noisier I am told.

Castorama (B&Q) have a range of aircon units in from about 170 Euro upwards. If you are getting one, look for one that can also act as a heatpump. Usually the aircon consumes 1.8kW of electricity. When used as a heatpump it provides 4kW of heat, which can slash your heating bill. The better aircon units designed for permanent installation will cost about 500 Euro, the best closer to 1000 Euro. At the top end you would expect to get two wall mounted units for inside and one external box. Of course this relies on you having somewhere outside the house to put the external unit.

At the lower end of the scale, there are one-box designs that can be free standing or wall mounted. These have a tube like the one on a tumble dryer to blow the hot air outdoors.
