871 Train map of Italy?

I think you'll have problems getting a decent 'on line-map'.

In the past I've bought the Thomas Cook International Rail Timetable - which includes all routes in Italy plus a 'diagramatic' map of the country.

Its relatively easy to plan your route using it

If you want to more or less travel North/south in the country trains are fine and link major cities.If you want to explore,visit rural areas (including most of Tuscany) you won't do much with trains.One could almost walk from florence to siena the time it takes to get there by train! for example.
Outside main cities you may find coach services easier in rural areas public services ie. buses/trains/taxis hardly exist.Any decent map of italy also shows the railroads usually black line and you'll see what i mean.

Many thanks - all excellent advice. I suppose there are rather too many hills to make Tuscany particularly rail-friendly! I was hoping to explore the region putting my bike on a train which would be slightly more difficult if travelling by bus instead.. (just about to post a query regarding cycling in Tuscany - this forum is great for helpful tips!)
