8837 Road Tax

I drive in Italy in my UK registered car. I have car insurance via Italsure with an American insurance company.

DO I still need my road tax, assuming I don't drive in the UK without it?

I don't display it as I now display my insurance doc like all the Italian cars.

Any advice would be greatly recieved.

Cheers

If its UK registered, then you still need road tax and an MOT.

Hi Chico,

As I understand it, the DVLA now automatically issues a fine if you do not renew your road tax. The only way round that is to SORN the car (confim it is not used on the UK roads) or permanently export it. However, the car would then not be registered anywhere, if you didn't reregister it in Italy, and it would be illegal to use it on the roads in Italy.

You also need to renew your MOT when it runs out, which I have just spent a lot of money doing, by returning to the UK.

If anyone has found a way round all these problems, I'd love to know.

No problem in getting the export document from the UK, it costs nothing....... reregistering the car here is a nightmare though and quite expensive. Typical Italian to get as much as they can.

If you no longer live in uk then you may be best to re register in Italy, It cost me E600 and yes it was a pain but once its done the revisione (MOT) only needs to be done ev 2yrs, and no more trips back to uk.
Also Italsure will still insure you with Italian plates.

I think if you read this thread here you will find that you only need to tax & MOT your car if you insure with a uk insurer &/or drive on the UK roads.

I stand to be corrected of course :winki:

Pip pip

Many thanks for your replies. I drove back last year to get the car MOT'd and am trying to avoid it this year, so may have to get the car registered in Italy. Something to look forward to!!!

I will also look into further whether or not I need an MOT (& a tax disc), if the car remains out of the UK.

Will keep you posted.

MAny thanks again, and if anyone has further thoughts please let me know.

Cheers

The way I understand the law is that it must be legal in it's country of registration therefore if registered in the UK must be taxed and tested there where ever it is used.
