9475 Car and pet insurance...

Hi here, my husband and I are moving to Italy in July for two years but are having problems finding an Insurance company for third party liability coverage for our dogs. We have two German Shepherd dogs so need to have the third party as they are deemed naturally aggressive breeds in Italy. Also does anyone have any information on car insurance? We drive a 4x4 import from Japan and will be bringing it from the UK. We had a hard time finding insurance for it here because it is an import and can't seem to locate anything for Italian insurance at all. Any help would be very appreciated. Thanks!!!

Hi I would do a search of the forum site, lots on car insurance, but not sure if the recent thread on insurance for dogs came to any conclusion.

When we were looking into house insurance, the lady in the PO (Poste Italiane), repeatedly emphasised that their house insurance policy did include 3rd party cover for dogs - ie if your dog bit the postman etc you would be covered. Have a look at their website for more details. You do have to have a bank account with them, but I don't remember there being any other conditions.

No idea re the car I'm afraid but Italsure has been recommended in other threads so may be worth speaking to them

(Note The government own the licence/number plates here).
Does your car have an English number plate? If yes then there are various English cos who will insure it eg AA do Axa Policy 365 days in Italy. Contact their Newcastle office. But if car needs MOT it seems you'll have to do it in UK. If not English number plate then it isn't difficult to get it re-registered in UK and to obtain UK number plates. It is MUCH easier than trying to obtain Italian plates. For 2 years stay, Italian car Insurance is very expensive because you have to start from scratch...no "no claims bonus ...not worth it.

It is worth having a word with Italsure about the car, even if they can not insure you they may well know who can.

Our dogs are insured with Polizzadelcane.com. They do exclude some dogs like pit bull terriers but GS are Ok. The insurance cost €21.67 + IVA per dog and cover is for €750.000.

Hope this helps.

Thank you all for your replys they have all been of help!!

€750,000? Neilo, could I extend a cordial invitation to you and your dogs to come and visit and give me a quick nip (the dogs, not you)? Could don a postino outfit if that would help. We'll split the proceeds 50/50.

Thats good value Neilo and I will bear it in mind should we ever get a dog, I am with Marc on this one, and as long as you promise its only a nip, you can all pop round anytime.!Though the welcome from the resident cats may not be so cordial.

Somehow I doubt the insurance co would pay out so much for a nip, but should one of the dogs run into the road and cause a traffic accident such cover would be necessary.
