we contacted e-mail : info @fco.gov.uk (recommended by Italian Embassy in London) and they advised us to contact the British Consulate for our area ( i.e. Puglia being Naples, Abruzzo -Rome etc). They came back with the following info, which we think is terrific.........

1) In order to apply for a "Carta di Soggiorno" you have to go to the police station ("Questura") in Brindisi, this is the first and most vital document you need before you can organise "residenza" and your health cover (in that order). I spoke to a very helpful lady who explained that they have interpreters there who speak perfect English so you will have all the linguistic assistance you require. You will need ID (passports), a document that confirms where you will be living (if you are a home owner)and a document from the DHSS that confirms you have retired. Always take originals of all documents required, it is useful to make plenty of photocopies before hand.

2) With regard to where to register for health treatment the local authority, "Azienda Sanitaria Locale". I advise you to organise E111 forms from your local post office to cover you for the initial period of arrival in Italy, you should get them stamped and them take them to the local health authority in order to register. 3) In order to apply for "residenza" you need to go to the Ufficio Anagrafe, again you need your passports and "carta di soggiorno".

All of these procedures are free of charge or require a very low fee. I was told that no specific translations were required, in the eventuality that translations are required (sometimes local authorities can ask for extra documentation), you could contact a local agency.

Also, is everyone aware that the E111 expired on 31st of December 2004, and you now need to apply for a new one for this year, and then at the end of this year (31st Dec 2005), they are issuing an EU Health Card. ?....at least that is what I read, and my Post Office confirmed it, so I am filling in a million ( exageration !!!!) forms for all the family who will be coming over to visit us when we finally get there.

We already have the EU health card here in Ireland - easiest thing in the world to get and so much handier than carrying around a piece of paper.

I found out about the changes to Form E111 after my friend applied for a passport renewal, otherwise, I wouldn't have known. It is still a paper form but I understand it will be replaced by the new EU card automatically after December 2005.
