9552 Newbie's to this forum

I would just like to say that all these things like Tags, groups, friends and so on you can use on this site are so not useful....especially to the newbie's amongst us. If you are a newbie you don't know what it all means anyway....It does not make the site anymore useful..I notice that these things are not used by all only some and this obviuosly only highlights the areas of a few,

General chat about Italy

I could not agree more but then things which are no use tend to wither away eventually and things which are abused get spotted and sorted in time.

I think you can have all the gismo's you like but at the end of the day the most important resource is the members.

I have returned to this forum only to find everything has changed....Is it better, or should it have been left alone? What things that have been changed to Italy mag have made a difference? Have they been helpful? What do you miss? Personally, I miss lots of the people that are no longer here....

I reckon members of groups should be alerted if there is any acticivity in the group. You get invited into a group and it takes you days before you realize someone's posyed something on there, because you don't check daily. People leave event dates for instance and you don't see it until after it happened. Can we do something about that?

Not wanting to come across as rude, but surely if you were that bothered, then you should check in more regular?

or you could share email adresses, but then you still have to be on the internet, and you still have to check your emails......

We must not complain.

We got shot of Aliena / Anastasia / Karena, Relaxed, Sancho, Wishful Thinker, Glen and drove away quite a few others but in return we have Tags, Groups, Friends, and Public Messages.

According to your membership page, you joined on 6 May, so you've now had a whole 11 days to decide which features here are useful and which not.

I find it intriguing how a 'new' member immediately focuses on criticising recent changes, but maybe you have a lot of experience of forums similar to this so you have definite views on such matters.

What intrigues me more is how, so soon after joining, you feel free to start criticising how things are arranged here. I'm sure The Management will be most grateful for your considered opinions. After all, that is the sort of response you'd expect to get if you visited a bar three times and then made a point of telling the owner how the menu, prices, decor, hours of opening and so on were completely wrong, isn't it?

Nielo is right: the only thing that really matters with forums such as this is the members. I'd add the qualification that the only thing that matters is having members willing to take the time to make useful contributions.

PS: Why don't we have a smiley with rolling eyes anymore? That's something I miss.

It's still there Allan but it's not been well  A mere shadow of its former self
:laughs:

I don't think it matters when someone joins or how long they have been a member. If they have a comment to make then they should be able to do so without having someone tell them that it is wrong for them to make observations on the decor because they have just arrived. You never know, they may be Jedi knights testing the water and drawing up plans to save all the sorry souls.

That's a matter of opinion, of course. I guess I'm well past the stage where I'd just smile politely if someone walked into my house (or 'my' bar) and immediately started spouting opinions about how badly things are arranged. :chatterbox:

Of course, if their opinions happened to coincide with mine, then I'd probably be more tolerant.

Also, while it would be very difficult to do in a real pub, here it's not difficult for a 'regular' - or former regular - to pop up looking like someone new. In such cases, their opinions are not necessarily ill-founded, but they can be mainly about the grinding of axes, contiinuation of feuds and settling of scores.

It's probably unfair of me to suggest that Bunch might be that sad, but such things have been known to happen here.

I think you are right Allan and I have my own theories as to why that is but why do you think there is continued suspicion, axe grinding etc on this forum?

Ah, I see where you are coming from now, but here's hoping your bar doesn't have bright green wallpaper, or that I will never enter it if it does. I'd have to give you my opinion about how you could change the poor choice of bright green for something more pleasant. :laughs:

I'm pretty certain you'll have fairly definite views on that question, :winki: but being the cynical sod that I am, I just put it down to people being people.

PS Thanks for pointing out the 'More' button on the smilie box.

I completely agree with this point of view. You have the option to elect to receive an e-mail if someone sends you a private message, and the private message is also flagged up as a notification when you log in, but you have to go through a slightly fiddly process to look at group messages.

If new messages in subscribed groups could be flagged as a notification (or one could request e-mail) then I think the groups would work very much better.

Sorry Allan, I seem to have touched a raw nerve. I shall keep my opinions to myself in future. I didn't realise I had to notch up more than 3 posts before I could make any kind of comment. Please do forgive my ignorance.

I have been away for about three months, I had a quadruple bypass back in March. When I returned to look at the forum, I was surprised at the change. At first I thought I was in another Forum. I like the new look , change is a good thing. I am glad to be back to see what others are saying and doing. I left Napoli almost a year ago and really do miss Italy.
Ciao, Dan
