9927 Taking a break

My other half, Pilch, whilst looking at some dodgy beams for someone, decided to have an altercation with a reinforcing rod...it won. Hands down (pun intended).
I, of course, had been sent off to do the "washing up" of some implement or other round the other side of the house. At an outside tap... No sooner had I set too than I heard a cry of some sort, a bird, it got louder and louder. Realising it was Pilch in some distress I dropped all and ran. Lying nearly face down on the floor, grey and sweating lay Pilch, groaning...arm displaced, at a funny angle.
Middle of Abruzzo countryside, no one nearby, dodgy mobile signal & Pilch becoming more and more incoherent. I do not drive. What to do? Who do we know? Dib & Dab, too far, Pip & squeak, out, Bits & pieces, at festal.. . Eventually, after going through phone book settle on someone less than 10 mins away with nursing experience and a nice big 4x4. Of course, all this was done in lightening speed to the sound of louder and louder groans and eventually screams and heavy panting. Pilch lay crushed and his energy depleting rapidly. He croaked, he needed a drink (double gin & tonic for me). Do I give him a drink...maybe not good in shock situation? Would they have to operate...I let him have a sip and tried to keep his spirits up...Nice weather for this time of year. You know that light hearted banter when you’re totally freaked and trying to remain cool and keep a stiff upper lip. Pilch was fading from heat. excruciating pain, and time was passing VERY SLOWLY....Eventually help arrived. She, had him up and in the car before you could say "break or fracture".
I don’t know if anyone knows the roads in Abruzzo, but lots of them are "unmade" and torturous at speed, twisty and the skiddy type...you get my drift. Well, it's the longest 30 mins of my life..Pilch, was swearing and cursing, grey and felt very cold, dripping with sweat and screaming as we hit every pothole. I hoped he would pass out, and I'm sure the driver did too, cos at every bump Pilch shrieked which nearly tossed the car into a ditch...We arrived at hospital, Pilch loaded into a wheel chair and taken to the accident & emergency room.... Now, screaming in Italian for something to stop the pain, he was given an injection...this had no effect. 10 mins, 20 mins (better if it had been a mallet).. still no effect. By this time Pilch is screaming louder and swearing in English (thank god). They took him into X-ray where I only heard more agonising screams. Pilch said to the doctor he was still in agony and the injection was failing to give any pain releif. Doctor said, " yes, that injection would not give any pain releif to this kind of injury..( why give it in first place?). The poor Italians sat in the corridor waiting to be seen next looked horrified. I kept murmuring "mia marito cadutto on Spalla" & "rotto". I only hoped they understood.
Pilch was found to have a dislocated arm and a fracture...He was tied into a sling and told to go away and not move or shower for one month! We came out. I like a dishrag & him striding around heading for the bar in the hospital. I had a coffee, he had a double stravecchia...He said, I'm just glad to be alive and upright...I murmured..... me too.

Glad Pilch is ok and you have got over your ordeal. Had a similar drama New Year with my other half. Drank too much and went headlong into rendered wall outside - speedy drive to hospital at 3am and needed 5 staples in head wound. The language was appalling and the doctor thought he was really funny being so drunk at that time of morning. I certainly didn't see the funny side till afterwards but he's fine now. Can't complain about the health system - in and out in under an hour.
