Good evening to all,

we are moving to calabria in march and my wife we were wondering if there any other brits in the area? Also our daughter is 8 years old and will be starting to school soon after we arrive, does anyone out there know how we go on about child benefit while in a foreign country ? I am sure there will be lot of questions later.

I don't think you can claim child benefit once you have left the UK permanently with your child. Looking quickly at the following document: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/childbenefit/ch5_notes.pdf it says:

You can normally get Child Benefit if you and the child or children you are responsible for usually live in the UK. Short absences abroad will not affect your right to Child Benefit and some people may have the right to Child Benefit even if they do not live in the UK.

also...

If your child goes abroad temporarily, you can continue to get Child Benefit for them for up to 12 weeks. You must tell us if your child is leaving the UK for more than 12 weeks.
If your child is temporarily abroad for more than 12 weeks, you may still get Child Benefit if they are abroad only for one of the following reasons:
• to receive full time education in an EEA country or Switzerland,
• to make an educational or foreign visit that is approved in writing by their school,
• to get medical treatment for an illness that began before they left the UK.

Hope that's a help.

We're not quite into Calabria, but way down in south Campania. We're not there full time yet, but go over a few times a year. Hope it all works out for you.

We moved to Marche last year and my daughter is 8. She started school in Spetember and loves her school.
