3837 Hello all - From Vernoa

Hi All,

I’ve just found this site I wished I found it when I was in the UK. I’m from London but moved to Italy Just over a year ago. Things have gone well since I’ve been here and I’m working, have learnt basic Italian and things are looking up. Sometimes life here can be stressful in trying to understand the Italian system but after a while you get used to it. My advice to anyone thinking of moving to Italy would be to be patient. Some things can seem very long winded compared to the UK system but that’s the way it is and you can’t change it. (Applying for permesso soggiorno, driving license, Doctor, Bank Accounts, Italian roads, strikes…) Once you have done all of the formal things you can relax and enjoy this beautiful country.

I hope you'll be sharing some of your experiences in Verona with us...

We nearly ended up there on a day trip from Venice last year, but then decided to head for lake Garda instead. It's still on our list of places to visit.

I'll be on holiday in Verona at the end of July for a couple of weeks. I can't think of a more fantastic place to be based, so handy for many northern cities. I'll be seeing a couple of operas at the Arena while I'm there. Got a lovely hotel run by fantastic people just a couple of minutes from the amphitheatre. They have been a real inspiration during my language study over the past few years. It's a favourite of many nationalities particularly the Brits!

Fortunately I haven't the least bit interest in driving while I'm there, so I'm using the excellent public transport system instead.

You lucky person, you - I'll be thinking of you when I arrive, staying there all the time whilst I have to come home! Where in Verona are you? Is it in the centre or outside on the hill? Are you far from the Santuario della Nostra Signora di Lourdes?

Well, maybe Lake Garda suited your mood at the time - but on your next visit Verona is a bit of a "must see"! Carlo Scarpa's efforts at the CastelVecchio museum are pretty fantastic - and (if you can get a guide with a machine gun...) try and get a guided tour around the bank he designed - lots of Rothko inspired "stucco alla veneziana" - and Verona has pavements in travertine, plus l'Arena.
Fascinating place - looks absolutely medieval/renaissance original - but was pretty comprehensively destroyed in WW2 - so it is all relatively new restoration architecture - but awfully well done.
