10295 Adding Tags

As the tag system seems to be getting used more often, would it not be a good idea to enhance it more. Just doing a few random word searches today, it appears that many subjects are not tagged, probably because they were initiated before the system was introduced.
I know the laws etc change quite often, but if any members see an interesting subject untagged, then perhaps for the few seconds it takes, may be worth adding one or two to it.

Good idea Geotherm. The tag system is a good search tool but as with most things it will only function if we learn to use it properly.

As Nielo says, the opportunity for abuse (self-abuse?) with tags is huge. Would it be possible for tags to be suggested, rather than imposed? i know it would put pressure on the Admin here if they have to approve them, but surely it would allow a form of Wikki to be created - without a full Wikki structure... Just a thought...

There is that point Nardini, as everything is open to abuse if it is used wrongly. Today I spent a few minutes searching wasps, hornets, etc and came up with a lot of information. Therefore added a couple of tags to the threads, so everything started to get together.
The number of times posts come up asking the same questions are immense, perhaps if the tags were not considered suitable then Admin could be asked to delete the irrelevant ones. Just a thought to make things on the forum easier to find!!!

I don't understand why you are saying that tags are 'imposed'! You are free to tag a thread with any word which you like (though there might be a naughty word checker :smile:)......

I'm having a go at tagging ths thread 'crocodile' - in the hope that one day someone searches on tags and learns 1) about tags, and 2) that crocodiles do not live in Italy!

Don't think many people on an Italian forum site would be searching for for TB or MTor crocodiles, but there again who knows!!!!

It is possible to have automatic tagging, but it does require careful setting up and some work for the site administrator.

The Admin would set a predefined limit for the repetition of words so if something was mentioned say 10 times in a thread it would be automatically tagged. Some words would have to be screened out, like ‘and’ or ‘the’.

This way the tag cloud would more accurately reflect what was being discussed and would be less open to abuse. It would also be more use for searches because it would not rely on just a few people bothering to add a tag, as and when they remember or feel like it.
