Sebastiano has just reminded me Lisa, our young friend in the next village often takes the bus to Rome, I will ask her about pick up points and prices and come back to you.

Yes in my experience the young in that area take the coach/pullman to Rome but may I suggest that if it stops at Tibertina on it's way to Termini, it's easier and much cheaper, to get a train to Fiumicino from there.

The other alternative is the train, the Eurostar takes about 3 hours and costs about E25 + a small supplement. It arrives in Terminii and you take the shuttle to Fiumicino. Alternatively the ordinary trains are slower / cheaper but also stop at Tibertina = Nobles suggestion.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for your suggestions about trains and buses but those options really won't work. Our son has an 11:45 am flight that is considered international and he'll have to be in Fiumicino several hours earlier to check in. We are using frequent flier miles for the Rome - London-Boston portion so also cannot consider flights into other airports.
Oh well, I guess the Alitalia flight it is!

If time allows, it may be more economical, and more relaxing, to get the train or bus over the day before and stay the night in an airport hotel or even in the airport itself!

Not at all comfortable, but the 03.36 Regionale train from Ancona gets you into Fiumicino at 0818 after a change at Tiburtina. Cost €19.30.

When does he want to fly? AFAIK (according to interminable adverts on Italian radio), Alitalia/Airone is doing €99 return flights domestically - with a time frame which I haven't listened hard to - so check out their website again, and maybe buying a return will get you this deal.
Nope - I get a min €217 single price on the www.alitalia.com site out of Ancona. Pity! Many other Italian airports have deals below the €99 level, but not Ancona.

Thanks for checking on this for me. He is leaving towards the end of August so it's high season unfortunately. I appreciate all of eveyone's help though.

The end of August? I must say I would absolutely not book yet - let Alitalia/Airone realise how desperate they are for passengers this year, and watch the prices come down!
Does anyone know of any airlines that fly from Ancona to Fiumicino other than Alitalia (Air One)? Our son has to get on a plane from Ancona and change planes at Fiumicino to continue his trip home. The price on Alitala is $275.00 for a one way flight which seems quite steep. I have looked at round-trip costs and they are a lot more, so there would be no savings purchasing a round-trip ticket. When I logged onto the Ancona Airport website, I saw Air France, Continental, Delta all listed in additon to Alitalia but no flights show up in a search engine for them to fly this route. I have a feeling that they all use Alitalia as the carrier to connect onwards.
as far as i know there are no alternatives, but depending on where you are there are regular bus services to Roma from most parts of the marche for a few euro and it takes more or less the same time as driving there.most buses go to termini central station where you can get the shuttle to fiumicino airport which comes up inside the airport itself for a young guy it shouldn't be a problem.
