Hi,
I applied/got mine firm the consulate in my home country (U.S) and they gave me the paper print there and then, whilst a plastic card arrived about 6 or 7 weeks later.
The card had been sent care of the consulate and they forwarded it on to my home address.
Kind of funky card though.... letters and numbers are a bit misaligned - sort of thing that if you saw it on a credit card you'd think you were dealing with fraud.

The most recent version of compromesso produced by my lawyer (don't ask!) gives my CF in exactly the same format as on my card: big numerals and smaller, capital, san serif letters. Very odd, since it looks nothing at all like the rest of the document.
More to the point and contrary to what some believe, the plastic cards can be sent to non-Italian addresses. One was sent to me at home in Scotland. Part of the reason it took a few weeks to arrive is that the plastic was embossed in Rome, sent to the Edinburgh consulate and then forwarded to me. So patience...
Having said that, I'm sure it's correct that you don't have to show the plastic and a printout or copy of it should be sufficient.

When I got my CF in Italy [took about 10 minutes - my estate agent took me to the office and explained what was required] it too was in paper form.
The plastic version was to be sent to my Italian address [which I hadn't completed the purchase on at that time] - so my estate agent went with me to the local post office and arranged [at no cost] for any mail addressed to me to be saved "in the back room" until I went to collect it.
The system worked!

One thing I hve noticed is that it is imposible to distinguish zeroes from Os and this often causes confusion and the name of my country of birth "Gran Bretagna e Irlanda Nord" appears as "Gran Bretagna e Irlanda". Neither of these versions works at Banca Posta who were forced to use some other fix on their computer system.

I don't think it is possible to have the letter O anywhere in a codice fiscale, other than possibly as the last letter, and the last character is, for non Italian nationals at least, always a letter.
It is quite easy to work out what your CF will be - it is constructed much like a UK drivers number, but that is not to say you can get away without a properly issued one!
If anyone would like to be a little coy about age or birthdate, do not give them your codice fiscale - these facts are included in the code :) :)
See if the PO has any luck with Regno Unito as a place of birth.

I don't know about your 2O year old codice Relaxed but my eight year old version has 1O letters and one of those is O !

I have only got nine letters - I have been shortchanged! Neverthless, it works.
I suppose if your name is Dee Boon - or something else with a load of vowels in it, and no spare middle names to get in on the act, maybe the CF has to resort to vowels, and you are right that there are differences depending on how old your CF is - at a certain point the changed the middle letter, I think, but only for either men, or women!
Dan Brown had nothing on this in the book :) :)
Had a delightful friendly squabble with an Italian commercialista about whether the letter "y" was a vowel or a consonant recently - L'Agenzia claimed it was a consonant....I thought they were right........but on the rare occasions it is used in Italian words the commercialista had a point of view too.

Our agents arranged our CF but we only ever got them written down on paper - have bank account details with them on but nothing official and of course our Trullo doesn't have an address so will need to get something sorted on that front when we learn enough Italian to scrap through at the post office or mailbox - then onto the web site mentioned by Ugo to see if we can get anywhere!!
P.s. don't talk to our agents anymore except via lawyer!! As they are as much use as a chocolate tea pot!

I thought that J, K, X and Y did not exist in the official Italian alphabet so one could argue that Y is in a class of is own.
I have heard Italians call the letter Y - IPSILON (as in LANCIA Y DIECE). I imagine they would write this as EPSILON but as Charles Joseph will be able to confirm that is the Greek letter E and UPSILON is the Greek letter Y.
My name has a J in it which I always tell to officials as I LUNGO but they often write as a Y.
:)

My name has a J in it too, and I use the word "Juventus", which is fine (except if the person writing it down is a fan of Roma!) :)

We just went down to Staples and got the A4 sheet laminated...
"Thank you in advance"
Aah - that brings back the old days for me, when Dos reigned!!
I shouldn't worry about not having the plastic card for any "formal" things like opening a bank account, or buying a property - the paper version will suffice. Having a plastic card is certainly not restricted to residents - it is simply that the system which issues the pastic cards is a bit slow, and (I believe) they cannot be sent to a non-Italian address.
I have had a codice fiscale for more than twenty years - my plastic card still has not arrived - it has not troubled me!!
