You can only claim Italian citizenship through your mother if you were born before 1948. Apparently, this restriction doesn't apply if you were to claim through your father....Now, I wonder why that is?

I claimed through my mother's line (though it was her grandfather who was Italian) and I was born in 1977, mom in the late 50's. The process is meant to be easier if you are claiming through the mother's line according to the info I was given.
All very confusing.

I was in the Italian Consulate last December and there were notices in English and Italian to this effect. When did you get your citizenship? There may have been change in the rules since then.
This is on the Consulate website:
Cittadinanza per nascita: Si è cittadini italiani per nascita (anche all'estero) per linea paterna (senza limite di generazione) o per linea materna (solo per coloro nati dopo il 1.1.1948).

Through the maternal line, the person must have been born after Jan. 1, 1948 not before as until country was a Republic, women did not have the right to pass down citizenship.

Ah, this explains it then.
Neil, we got our citizenship sorted in 2002/3.
If you are British I doubt there is any real benefit to having the Italian passport. If you are non-EU though it is very very helpful to have.
