4041 Status for obtaining an Italian passport

Could someone be kind enough to let me know what the process is with obtaining an Italian passport? I am married to an Italian citizen and have been for nearly 5 years. I only registered our marriage with the Italian embassy last year. My husband says I should be able to apply for my Italian passport soon. I've tried emailing and calling the embassy in London but am having difficulty speaking to someone in English. What I have managed to get out of them is that I need to register as an Italian citizen. Does anyone know what that involves? I hold a South African passport. Thanks for reading.

If you ring the Italian Embassy in London and ask to go through to the Citizenship and Registry Office the lady there will be able to help you. Her English is not fantastic but she is very patient and will give you the right advice.

Failing that you can contact Raffaele de Parolis at the Italian Consulate in Johannesburg or Bruno Sauchele (not sure of spelling) at the Embassy in Cape Town. Any one of them should be able to help you.

You do not need to register as an Italian citizen but instead have to apply for citizenship. You wilpl need an official copy of your birth certificate (with an attached apostille), a copy of your fedina penale (basically, something from your home country that says you have never been arrested) , copy of your certificvato di matrimonio and possibly a few other docs. You will take all of this to the citizenship office at the prefettura and they will give you an application that will have to be filled out in full and your husband will have to sign it. Once the application is completed and received, turn around time is about 2 years for citizenship then once you have it you can apply for a passport.

Hello and welcome to the Forum. I guess that you may have done this already, but the obvious is to ring the nearest Italian consulate and ask them to give you the list of documents you require. I assume that your marriage has been registered either in Italy or through an Italian Consulate, so youi could not have many problems. Good luck!

Before you apply for a passport, you'll need Italian citizenship. Submit your citizenship application and supporting documents at the Italian consulate, then expect a 2 year wait.

Dear all thank you again for all the usefull informations.
We have been registered at the italian consulate since the first year of our marriage.I have checked the necessary documents asked by the consulate and will submit them once collected.I have one more question:They asked for a certificate of no criminal records. My question is,as Igrew up in a different country than my country of origin where my dad was a diplomate and do not have anymore contacts there what so ever ,how am I going to provide that document? Can I go instead to the Ambassy here in London?
Thanks a lot

I would ask the embassy of the country where you lived for the address to send for a certificate of no criminal record.

Usually, the certificate stating that you do not have a criminal record is provided by the Police Department of the country where you reside.
