its just about that time of year again and i know its a cost of living thing but to my mind its more relevant for people that own property here either resident or non...

there is in fact very good and confusing information on the forum regarding it all... however with Prodi making changes for the finance act in 2007 a lot of what has been posted in the past becomes out of date so quickly...

so wondering about it all i thought this link would be useful to all that wonder ...should i or should i not be filling in some sort of form...

so here's the wikipedia version of it all and it then has the various links within to go straight to the relevant Italian sites

Imposta sul reddito delle persone fisiche - Wikipedia

now the advantages i see with this way of keeping up to date is that you do not have to read the official gazette to keep up to date with laws..on tax... or even by IL sole 24 ... the wiki tends to get updated by helpful others...

the other point is that to my mind its pretty awful trying to make head or tail of the Italian tax system... Italians cannot and virtually all use a local bookkeeping firm to sort it all out... not an accountant in general...

why well because they are cheap... and also unless you have complicated bits and pieces like investments based in Italy several homes or a business its all very simple and quite within their remit...

talk to a neighbour...providing they don't drive a porsche cayenne ...pick the one with the old fiat and find out who they use....

its best not to put it off completely and pretend you do not know the rules... because you will have a code fiscale and this will make the tax authorities completely aware of most of what you do here via your bank, some of your shopping, your car and your comune

finally the whole process should not cost an arm and a leg... and in most cases the tax will be low to zero... however it is bringing in a large amount of info on who declares what and not... and its basic aim from Prodis government was to make tax avoidance here easier to detect... so be careful what you do or do not declare as its aim is to catch people spending money here without declaring incomes... earned in Italy... how you approach it as regards money outside... saved or otherwise i think is not going to be too relevant... they are after the people that live here with no way of showing how they live

should say..am not an accountant.. so my last comments should be checked carefully with someone a lot more knowledgable or follow what i say at your own risk...

What have you got against Porsche Cayenne owners? :winki:

Wouldn't people who own one of these fabulous vehicles be the ones to ask - as they may have more money than the owner of the little old Fiat - and that could be due to having the best (or most creative) 'Bookkeeper'?

No J&C they drive the posh car because they still live with Mummy!, ask the old fiat driver instead, I can think of a few around here with "only" 5 houses, the more derelict the more dosh? just isnt done to flash it.But then I live in Marche where they know all about tax collection, to very much paraphrase, better a corpse in the house than a Marche tax collector at the door.

Does the average Italian actually file? I thought if you were an average employee with tax with held at source you didn't need to file normally.

You can inherit a few houses pretty easily these days. But a new Porchese is seldom left in the will. Plus a new 911 could buy you three or four houses around here. Even a boxer is more expensive then some houses.

Where are you Nick?, I am not talking ruins here, but appreciate that different areas have different situations. Whats a boxer plse?

A reasonable query posted by Nick (as in does the 'average Italian file'). In my experience, yes they do. Okay, they all have a commercialista in the family so it costs nearly nowt, and it is not a big professional deal, but nevertheless they do file a tax return. If it was a 'no brainer' just to ignore this stuff, I think the average Italian would ignore it. The fact that they do not ignore it simply reinforces adriatica's sensible (and not expensive to implement) advice.

(For angie, a boxer is a type of Porsche IMO much more desirable than a Cayenne...but probably a bit passe now!)

I'm flash and still living with Mummy Angie, but my Cayenne is the bain of my life with petrol prices at todays dizzying heights - and even though it's just gotta go - I wont be buying a BOXSTER as everyone knows it's a poor mans Porsche and there is always those nosey neighbours who love a good gossip to worry about.

How do you think a slightly used Aston Martin would go down in Marche? :laughs:
