11572 Vineyards to visit in Puglia

Vineyards open to the public in Puglia (or possibly Abruzzo),

Help please!
Someone posted an identical question or search about 3 years ago and got virtually a nil response, but we'll try again anyhow!
A significant family birthday is coming up and thoughts have turned to having a few days' holiday in April or May do visit a few vineyards. We both have a liking for Puglia and some of the Primitivo wines too. Does anyone know of vineyards in the region that are open to the public at that time of year that sell some of the aforementioned or similar wines? I believe there's quite a GB presence in the region now, so fingers crossed for some local knowledge please.

Thanking anyone in advance.

Puglia

A few years ago we did a tour at Consorzio Produttor Vini in Manduria - it was only a few minutes south of Oria. We had an english speaking guide, but it was arranged as a party visit. Their wine was excellent - keep meaning to go back to get some more - primitivo - they also did the dolce form which is sweeter and more like a port.

Their web address is: www.consorzioproduttorivini.com.

We also did a tour of a commercial scale olive farm which was interesting (may be only to us as we have olive trees) but may also be worth thinking about.

I have a book I picked up at the Italy exhibition which details all the wine producers in Puglia so if you want to try elsewhere let me know - all their contact details are listed.

Dear Flyingpigs,
Thanks very much, that's really useful. I would also appreciate other details, especially near Locorotondo or Ostuni, also Salento of course, if you would send them.

Steve

Every town and city also have a cantina or two. Or three, four, five, depending on the population. Some cantinas like this Cantina Sociale del Locorotondo
sells in bottles. Others sells in bulk and you bring your own plastic container (or buy one). In Ceglie Messapcia we know of three such wine sellers.

So even if you don't find any winegrowers to visit, you can certainly taste their products at a very reasonable pirce.

Good luck and happy drinking.

Here's another two to try - just picked from the book. We have a place in Ostuni and I don't recall seeing any vinyards around us - just olives, olives and more olives.

The vinyard we went to sold the wine in bulk into your own plastic containers, but also had plenty of bottled wines too. They were far cheaper than I have since seen them in the shops - wished we had bought more and keep meaning to go back but never quite get around to it - always so much to do and so little time.

Enjoy your break.

For a complete list of the main ones go to Vini di Puglia | Le fiere, gli eventi del vino pugliese nel mondo loads have got weblinks tours etc - you are really spoilt for choice and there are some stunning wines

I think they`re maybe not as organised in Puglia for visits to actual vineyards as they are in other parts of Italy (eg. the Chianti area), although you can go to most cantine (usually to buy rather than just to look - although they`ll probably show you round as well). I think most visits tend to be impromptu (unless organised by a local like the one the FPs went to). I can`t imagine they`d be too impressed if people wanted to have a tour etc. and then ended up not buying a reasonable amount of wine. What do others think?

Thanks to everyone. This is very useful for someone with limited knowledge of the region. I hope that will change a little at least in a few months time.
