11899 Champions League

How did the Italian sides do this week.............................?

[I only ask - cos I expected something in the Sports Forum on the superb Italian football teams, and it seems to have gone very 'quiet over there']

Ah Manchester United got through against Internazionale. Roma did against Arsenal. One of them was a Champions League match but I don't know which one. lol

Well, there are no Italian teams left in the Champions' League now.

Manchester United 2 - Inter 0 (2-0 aggregate, Man United qualify)
Roma 1 - Arsenal 0 (1-1 aggregate, Arsenal won on penalties)
Juventus 2 - Chelsea 2 (2-3 aggregate, Chelsea qualify)

Thank you Janie for putting me right I forgot about the other leg in the Roma V Arsenal match.

Which is, of course, the point you were making Alan!

Alan
We went down to the Roma match with stab proof buttock protectors endured the dour but rewarding match and were then locked in until 1.30 am and then escorted all around the city and finally to the station at about 2.30am. The main thing is that we got through and reaffirmed English footballs style and thrills beat Italian scheming and defensivity every time.

Fine, we win the the club stuff, but how the 'Steve Flack' (Exeter City) are we ever going to win the world cup like this:

Man U. 4 English players, Arsenal, no english players (one sub.), Chelsea, 3 english players.

School boy error, should never forget, it's a game of two halves, sometimes four!

You must have been watching somewhere else, as I believe Roma lost on penalties to aresenal! having one the game 1-.0 which was a reverse of what arsenal done at home too.
I also believe, they lost 1-0 against chelsea in the group stage, but beat them 3-1 at home too. "scheming and defensive"! Would make you about 80 years of age, popular mythical viewpoint from the 60s and 70s! "reaffirming English football style" This would make you about 10 years of age! as its taken a lot of money and imported managers and players to get to this stage, although not sure what you think is being reaffirmed! as the most successfully team of this decade so far is AC Milan ! Who with 3 final appearances and two victories! in 8 years seems to make a mockery of your statement!!!!

Please don't mix up excessive amounts of money with some sort of advance ability! even the England manager happens to be from the old school of scheming defensive Italians!
and he has not done too bad, so please don't make me laugh.....otherwise I might point out that we have schemed our way to two world cup wins and 3 finals in the last 7 finals.
Something you will have to keep dreaming about, being as money alone is never enough......!!!!!!!!!!!

Loving the passion Giovanni

Sadly history will record that the Arse got through and that there are no Italian teams left in the competition. I'm proud to follow Italy in the world cup (usually after Engerland have been sent a casa) and have as one of my highpoints here crying when they won last time round - we were sat around the dinner table with the family that has adopted us here. We cried, we cheered, we swore.... they ate their dinner.:laughs:

My old team, the mighty Cov City have has a couple of exports to Italy - both failures 1. Robbie Keane 2. Jay Bothroyd (who I hear you ask).:veryconfused:

Do you know any Italian football chants? e.g chi a mangato tutti le torte? or come largo devono essere il goal?

Because as a nation we don't like to get excited before we win anything, in my opinion the three ties we're very evenly matched and the italian teams we're hardly outclassed. I always judge a countrys football on it's national team and by doing so england would have to win the next three world cups to match our achievements maybe that's why they chose an italian manager:winki:

It is true that the British know where the best managers are from

Capello - England
Trappatoni - ROI
Ancelotti - Chelsea?
Zola - West Ham
Di Matteo - MK Dons

see a pattern forming here?

Folks, folks, folks..........

Wonderful to see the 'chattering'......................

BUT,

Liverpool are without doubt the BRITISH champions of Europe BY A MILE........

WE have an extremely daunting task this season due to the draw (Man U go lucky ....again me thinks !!!)......but we've done it before, personally not a Rafa fan..........but we've done well over the years................

I'd like to find a 'tongue in cheek' smiley somewhere!

im sure the CL is fixed this season

what were the chances that every english team gets an italian team bar one because there wasnt an italian team for them to draw?
and whats with Man United getting another easy draw? im sure its sorted so they get to Semi's or finals again to show some heroic double win or something of the sorts.

Post deleted by #1.....to avoid WW3 breaking out....

wish id seen the WW3 inducing post now

Nice to see Man United be ratteled by Porto! 2 away goals for Porto and now to there home Leg, unless they have a real Brain melt they have to hold this!

What a result at Anfield!

Having no TV in Italy I wandered up to the bar in the village a few weeks ago to watch Man U v Inter. Chelsea had beaten Juve the previous night.
There were 10-12 of us there, and I was the only non-Italian, so I sat on my hands only to clap whenever Inter hit the woodwork
Inter lost.
So we switched to the Roma v Arsenal game which had gone into extra time. As midnight approached Arsenal finally won on penalties.
In the space of 24 hours all 3 Italian clubs had been eliminated by an English club.
As I left the bar I felt as though I had gatecrashed someone's funeral!

I'm wondering which English team is most supported by english-speaking italians now... personally I prefer Chelsea to ManU and Arsenal, what do you think about it ? There's more Italy in Chelsea's history than in the other teams (Zola, Di Matteo, Ranieri, Cudicini, ...)

Oh yes I do,none have won anything in England as managers yet.

i think if you take a look from further out they have achieved things

Capello is turning England into a team to fear from a team with huge potential but never achieved anything close to what they could.

Trappatoni is doing the same with Ireland, turning them into a team that plays nice passing flowing football that might actually qualify for a world cup for once!:eeeek:

Carletto - N/A as of yet

Zola - has taken West Ham from near the foot of the Premier League to the top end near the european football places! bringing in Italian style play of a strong defence and a diciplined midfield supplying the balls for Di Michele, yes he is Italian as well.

Di Matteo - In his first season has almost taken MK Dons from League one to the Championship! he is 4 points short of Automatic promotion so thats not out of the question yet for them!

looking at the larger picture the Italian "allenatore" have done quite alot to be proud of in England, a manager's ability is not just judged on how much silverwear he can carry.

I fly out on Sunday and I'm hoping the games will be shown in Italy. If they are can someone tell me what channels they will be on and will they be satellite or terestrial tv. Finally, are the games likely to be shown in the local bars or are the Italians less interested in foreign teams?
