They have a good - very good - reserve in Angelo Perruzzi. I say this because there is a question mark over Gigi Buffon's participation. I understand he is having to explain himself to the Italian FA after being accused of betting on a match in which he played. I for one hope the allegations are unfounded; it would be dreadful if that was all the current best goalkeeper in the world was remembered for. But then again it depends on whether it was just one time or he was doing it big-time.

Quando imparanno mai? (to quote an old song from the 60s!)

Attackers ? Che ridere... I learned that in english they are called forwards...

Italy is going nowhere. Also if I hope they will, but I don't believe in them.

They won by luck in 1982 and since then ? Nothing. Just alot of shame.

We'll see.

I say forza Italia...but not to loud.

Ciao a tutti che ci credono.

Hey, but they managed to get a 1-1 draw against Scotland (my country!) in Glasgow (3/9/05) during the World Cup qualifications!!
Getting a draw, away from home, against the best team in the world seems pretty good to me..... :)

mmmm let me remember,
1990 3rd
1994 2nd place, losing against Brazil only after extra times and penalties
1998 Out, but losing against France (who won the W. cup) only after extra times and penalties

Ok, they're not victories, but something more than nothing and shame.
And are you so sure it was only luck in 1982 ?
After all the azzurri won against Brazil, Argentina and Germany, not properly secondary teams

Anyway, in my opinion this is the time for England :)

if you apply my 12 year pattern, 82,94,2006, they will reach the final.

if you apply the fact that p. rossi, the hero of 82 had just returned from
an 18 month ban, and the pressure applied by ALL outside sourses to distroy
italys chances, then this is the best thing that could have happened.

they now have plenty of excusses, for failing. Somehow i believe this will
help them more so, becides which they are pretty good as a team to
start with...

1990 3rd.... that was penalties as well...

Now looks like Lippi might be hanging up his world cup tracksuit too!!!
What a sad sorry state of affairs.
I really hope Gigi Buffon is not found to be involved.
I think he is the best thing since sliced bread.
Having met him on several occassions he just seems such a nice big soft lump.
I would be very sad to see him end up in a mess.
Moggi was always antipatico so not really so shocked or sympathetic for him.
Hey how about if Italy step down and we give Scozia a chance ???? :p

The only thing I know about football is that the Italian team is invariably the best looking by miles. And where else in the world would you find a guy with a name like Francesco del Piero doing something as mundane as playing footie? He sounds more like a Renaissance painter to me! I remember he played last time, so presumably he's quite good?

Avvocato Gianni Agnelli, among other things owner of Juventus - Del Piero team - nicknamed Del Piero as "Pinturicchio", a Renaissence painter

Well I never, know Pinturicchio well, there's a fresco attributed to him in a church in our village. Thank you for pointing this out and apologies, gentlemen, for going somewhat off the thread. V

Are you sure you watched 1982 World Cup ?

Italy-Argentina: 2-1
Italy-Brazil: 3-2
Italy-Germany: 3-1

Maybe we can talk about slow start, but after that it was anything but luck. No match lost in 1982. Luck ???

This year they had good chances to do well....unfortunately recent events are not helping at all.

Sergio

for me the squadra azzura was a shame in the last 24 years.
but thats my opinion.
i hope they will do well.
but italian football is a shame and now even more.
the real fans are the victims now.
i was ready to support them for the worldcup but now ?
they never played good enough to make there fans happy.
always luck. tie games or close victorys.
and if you watch the game against brazil from '82 again, you can see that it was more luck then other. brazil had there best team in that year but a bad day against 'us'. sure luck is part of a tournament. but italy never satisfy there fans. just sofferenze e io ne ho piene le p...e di soffrire partita per partita...!
ciao.

most football fans will take a win anyday, rather than a loss but there team
played well!!!
but there are Italian fans who want both, and winning is not enough!

as for luck against brazil, well it should have been 4-2, but the ref dissallowed
a perfectly good Italian goal.
And football is about attack AND defense, and in 82 the brazilians could not
defend therefore they were not the best team there.

Call it luck if you like, but it is swings and roundabouts.

in 94, not only did brazil have the luck to beat holland [they were not better]
and if you have forgotten that one of their goals WAS offside, big time and
holland were denied a true penalty, but in the final against ITALY, not only
did they have almost a full days extra rest, but the ITALIANS had to travel
2500 miles.
now no one ever calls the brazilian lucky?

Ok, ho capito....sembri vittima del solito problema italiano dell'erba del vicino che è sempre più verde, comunque, rispetto la tua opinione.

If you watch the 'big corp' ads on TV (coke, pepsi, nike etc) you'd think Brazil had already won the bl***y world cup! Those companies, Pele and most of FIFA think the sun shines out of a Brazil ***! :) For this reason, I hope they don't win it!! A knock-out for them in the 1st round would be pretty good as far as I'm concerned.

Also, not sure about the £500k pre world cup party at Beckingham Palace! I hope it doesn't happen but, again, thats just asking to be knocked out. Why can't they just be low-key and get on with it?

Poi Sergio, noi in Toscana non è che amiamo la nazionale. Per motivi che nascono anche del famoso '82. Dio boia.

What I'd like to know is why Alessandro del Piero decided to have his head totally shaved..... is he going to be any better a calciatore? It sure doesn't suit him.

I will settle for baldeagle winning the golden boot along with the World cup.;)

The problem with Alex is that he always seemed to freeze in the big tournaments and has never done himslef justice. Una grande vergogna.

Obviously as I am English I would like to see England lift the Coppa Mondiale, but it sure as hell would do the game in Italy a power of good if gli Azzurri won. Or would that simply be a green light for the peopple who run the game in Italy to continue as before, like Piedi Puliti never happened? Or am I being cynical?

No Peter not at all. Nor am I !!!!!!
I would love to see Italy lift the cup.
However, they have a ready excuse for if they don't------------"siamo stanci dopo i piedi puliti scandolo"
Or "non abbiamo i numeri degli arbitri mondiali"!!!!

alex has shaved it a few summers in a row. Dont doubt il pinturicchio, if he is given a chance he will perform! Forza alex!!

Decent team only shouldnt we be concernedthat Peruzzi scored 2 own goals last season and hes a goalkeeper!

don't you just like maths.....:)

i wonder why Lippi didnt choose Tavano for the team over Iaquinta dont get me wrong but i thought that Tavano scored more last season?
