Curious to know what route BA does. Looking at Alitalia, they fly from Ancona to London Heathrow - , €291 this Thursday, one way

Have you tried talking to BA about your need to visit a sick friend in a hurry? - I know on some routes they can be very accommodating [time & cost] in special circumstances

Sorry about your friend - dealing with ill family or friends in the UK is one big downside of living overseas.
What about train to Rome and then easyjet to Gatwick?
Alternatively have a look at Alitalia or Lufthansa - Ancona to LHR - however, both would involve a transfer at either Rome or Munich. Now the 'cheap' airlines have all the add ons often the fare difference is not that much. Or as you have said, BA to Gatwick. Unfortunately, booking last minute is rarely cheap, but try all the broker sites such as kayak, cheaptickets etc - then you can easily get a comparison and an idea of routes on offer.

They offer various routes from Italy- possibly, for convenience, A&R are looking at the Bologna - Gatwick route

Thank you everyone, the Bologna Gatwick by BA still looks the best, I need to be down in Sussex by the coast so Gatwick would be best option.I will let you know, yes this is when living in Italy is difficult.
