Hi,
What about Ferrara (north of Bologna)? It's a small Unesco World Heritage town and apparently there is a train link to Venice.
We stayed at [URL="http://www.ilbagattino.it/"]Il Bagattino - Room and Breakfast - Ferrara[/URL] - a bed and breakfast right in the centre of Ferrara. We found it through Karen Brown web-site, and generally speaking, have found the places recommended on her web-sites to be of good quality.
Happy travels!

Hows about catching a boat into Venice instead.
OK its not the Ritz but its just off the m/way looking straight across to Venice, is very cheap and safe, with direct boats across to the magical city.....

We stayed in Padua [Padova] few years ago - its only about 15 [fast] to 30 [local] minutes away by train. The train trip into Venice was easy
If you look at sites such as;-

it will give you some hotels near the station.
The view as you exit the station in Venice and go down the steps towards the Grand Canal is fantastic.
