One less way to cross the Channel when driving down.

LD Lines are supposedly adding Dover-Boulogne to all their other channel crossings on July 1 2009. So the route should be back again soon if anyone has a particular liking for Boulogne.

Had me rushing to see who I had booked with at Christmas but thank goodness it was Norfolk Line from Dunkerque.
Not much of a Christmas for the company bosses or their poor employees.

Great shame - we always used them - it was a very efficient service and Boulogne a lovely port to come into.

In fact we still have eight crossings left on a ten crossing ticket - however, in the light of everyone losing their jobs, houses, etc, losing a few hundred pounds seems pretty inconsequential.

If you bought the ticket on your Credit Card, you should be able to claim the unused bit back from the Credit Card provider

I am suddenly feeling very humble. To buy the bulk ticket was a gamble that we lost. I feel that to claim the money back now is almost immoral. No idea why I feel like this as it comes back from credit card company rather than Speedferries assets, but somehow it doesn't feel right. I think that I am gaining at someone else's expense perhaps.

Daresay my husband will do it anyway!

Norfolkline are offering a discount to Speedlink ticket holders, it announced a special 20% discount for affected SpeedFerries customers who are able to provide proof of an existing reservation. This offer is bookable until the 12th December for all departures in 2008 and 2009 subject to availability.
See the Norfolk line website for details

I have many friends in the Dover/Folkestone area who work for the cross channel companies. At least six of whom DID ('til yesterday) work for Speed Ferries. Two of them have families and I cannot imagine how worried they must be now.

But such industries are always going to be among the first hit when people begin to tighten their belts and are staring recesssion in the face. Dover has always been a high unemployment area - often well above the national average. I remember when I opened a new BT call centre in Dover in the mid 90's, I employed some 25-28 year olds who had never had a job! They were some of the best employees we ever had. They knew what it was be forced to go without. Not like many who just jump on the bandwagon and milk the system for all they can get.

Oh, I feel so sorry for Dover - it doesn't deserve this!

The worst news is that those people who loose their jobs are not going to be able to find new ones. It is all part of this tragic crisis which should not have happened if a bit more care had been applied. It is happening not only in Dover, but practically around the world. And nobody is coming up with solutions that could turn the tide..... Politicians have spent months trying to convince us that we were not heading for a global recession. Who can believe them now?

The news today is horrific - Woolworths and MFI gone to the wall. Speedferries do not even make the national news (not that I have seen) so one wonders how many other 'small' companies have gone under.

My heart goes out to all those affected - to lose one's job at any time is awful but at present when as Gala says there is little hope of another is just tragic.

It has stopped me worrying about the euro rate - at least I have enough to live on - even if a bit more frugally.

Me too; and although I'm not in the holiday property/swimming pool brigade I too feel pretty well off. I need to plan purchases like the new snow tyres I want (actually after the trip to work this morning I'd say 'need', along with new knickers...) but I do appreciate what I have.
