11889 Ancona Ferries

Has anyone ever used the ferry service form Ancona to Croatia? We are thinking of going over to Croatia for a week or so while we are in Italy this summer - other option is to go over to Croatia and then drive back to Uk from there - any experiences welcome. I've looked on the web sites but would really welcome any info form anyone who has done the trip.

Chris,
We have not done that but my in-laws did several years ago from Dubrovnik to Ancona with their vehicle. It was an overnight trip and they said the sleeping arrangements left much to be desired but was quicker than driving all the way around. This could have changed since then.

Hi Chris,

We had a trip booked to Croatia the year before last and compared costings between the ferry (from Pescara) and taking the car or to fly. The ferry to the mainland (Split) was a long journey and not cheap, whereas OnAir ran a summer service for about €100 return and with Easyjet (and dare I mention the other low cost carrier?) running schedules from various Croatian airports, I managed to put an itinerary together for Stansted-Pescara-Split-Stansted for less than £100 all in. Even with car hire for a week, it worked out cheaper than the ferry. The big plus was it's only a 45 minuted flight, compared to about 7 or 8 hours on a ferry.

As it turned out, we didn't go in the end due to my mum passing away very suddenly, but we hope to try again one day. We were booked into what appeared to be a fantastic little hotel in world heritage town near Split and when I phoned the day before we were due to arrive and explained why I had to cancel, they were so upset for me they waived any charge and sent me an email from all the hotel staff offering their condolences. I was really touched by this little gesture, during what was a really traumatic time. I can dig out the name of the place if you are interested.

Thanks for the suggestions - looking at the map I think if we do it (& if we don't get any rentals the house will be empty so we'll probably stay in Italy for a month) we'll probably do the ferry and then travel back through Slovenia, Austria and Northern Germany (have friends we can call in on) which is not significantly further than driving from Le Marche.
