If you are considering taking a low cost flights to Milan Malpensa [Charter flights or EasyJet from Gatwick for example], they probably fly into Terminal 2 at Malpensa. [I arrived there on an EasyJet flight from Madrid]
Terminal 2 is several Km from Terminal 1. So allow lots of time for transfers to connecting flights from Terminal 1
Terminal 2 also only has very basic facilities, and all car hire is done at Terminal 1. All Terminal 2 has is a load of phones that connect you to the Car Hire desks at Terminal 1.

I am sure that will be a useful warning.
As a matter of interest, did you check out other airlines before opting for Easyjet? I have found Barcelona/Rome Fiumicino is generally cheaper on Alitalia, and a couple of weeks ago Fiumicino/Heathrow was cheaper on SwissAir than with Ryanair's inferior option of Ciampino/Stanstead!
It's always worth looking around beyond "cattle class" - especially at peak holiday times.
