3539 New Cabin Luggage Restrictions at Pescara Airport

Hello,

I flew out of Pescara last week - usually I just stick with Carry On but this time I was presented with a list that said all Digital Camera's MP3 players and any other electrical items had to be checked in...... so had to check in my small bag along with my ipod.....and ended up having to wait for ages at Stansted...

Just wondering if this is a national rule a Pescara one or a temporary measure....

Or could this be a cunning ploy for Ryan Air to grab a fiver off you - (luckily I didn't have to pay though).....

this is not the first time this has been mentioned; it strikes me from this thread that it's an airport thing, rather than a Ryanair thing....

I think the grabbing a fiver sounds about right there!!!
I flew from Forli on the 23rd April and back from Stanstead on 26th. We had cabin luggage which contained digital camera, new kettle and toaster and nothing was said!!!!

I think there must be a factory in Pescara which makes a combination cellphone/mp3player/gameboy/digital camera/pda, and the airport is run by the nephew of the owner of this factory - so buy one, you can take cellphones on, apparently, which is a bit wierd since they don't let you use the things in flight....!!
(Does seem to be a Pescara specific snaglet, see the other thread!) :)

We flew from Pescara to London Stn on 27th April and were told as we checked in that cameras were not allowed on any flights to London. This was a new regulation bought in that week by the Italian government. After much debating, we had to put our camera in the suitcase. As we walked outside there was a girl taking a picture of her boyfriend in front of the plane with her mobile phone!!!!!! This is all very annoying, as we usually only travel with hand luggage. I guess it is all for our own safety at the end of the day?

I think you are all missing the point, and in the process being completely unfair on the baggage handlers who make our trips so pleasant and care free. We have all seen the news clips of Rome airport with the poor under paided baggage handlers been reduced to opening bags and taking a few unwanted items from the luggage just to make ends meet. Do you really need those ski's? They only get in the way on the lift. What about that expensive camera? You are only going to spend all holiday worrying about getting it wet or stolen.
So What do you do? rather than go with the sensible option, you decide to take it as hand luggage. Never mind the fact you have got to drag it from toilet to bar until the plane takes off, then you run the risk of it falling on someones head half way thought you flight. But do you think once of the luxury items you are personally denying the Baggage handlers? I think not:mad:

Now Pescara has bought in a rule to help you stop the inconvenience you put yourself thought and you complain??:D

At the moment it seems as if this regulation is only in place at Pescara airport. We enquired about it when we flew out of there on Sunday and were told it was instituted by the Italian police as the Pescara - Stansted route was considered 'sensitive'.

Ryanair did not charge us for the hold luggage and I think they are smart enough to realise the fight they would have on their hands if they did.

Ha! I'm not going to tell you what a baggage handler will take from a checked bag at Capodichino in Napoli! :D

What!! You mean they would leave the bag? you do surprise me:D

I though it was Thiefrow where the worst problems were! I tested Ciampino one day by checking in a box which said it contained a brand new laptop (it didn't, that was in the handbaggage but all the packaging and a few unimportant things like paperbacks were in the box to make up the weight), but either all the baggage handlers thought "nobody could be so stupid as to tempt us like that" - or there was an honest crew on that day!!

They are just lulling you into a false sense of security, your name is now up on the board under ‘Suckers who now think it is safe to place a laptop and camera in the hold’. ;) Having said this I think you are more liable to get breakage than theft, I(touch wood) have never had anything stolen on a flight, but I did have to spend a weekend in Krakow smelling very strongly of women perfume. :o

I'd be very worried to put items such as cameras into the baggage. Officially, you're now not even allowed to lock your cases and we only have one of those very light locks that you can tear off in a second. We took bottles of wine in ours in Feb from Ciampino to Prestwick and I'm glad nobody fancied any booze or dried pasta ...;)

What I don't understand is that mobile phone waves can be much more of a threat to the navigation system than cameras! As all stuff gets scanned anyway, any unsavoury attempts to smuggle bombs on board should be foiled there & then. And don't tell me everyone turns their mobiles off...

I think Mark's got a viable point here... creating new 'business opportunities', eh?!!

Even worse story from Stanstead - a friend tells me when he went to hire a car there recently he was required to give a thumbprint. According to the car hire desks it was "no thumb print, no hire car". Apparently an edict by the Essex Police force. Scary stuff....

I love those scanner things, I usually have to be drag away from baggage control. While I was playing 'Guess who the handcuff and whip belongs too', at Ciampino last time, I noticed the staff seemed more interested in chatting to each other than watching the screen. If this happens in front of everyone, how much notice do they take of the hold baggage where no one sees them?

Don't worry too much Mark.

Italians know what they are doing even when they are doing something else. Don't you know they have eyes in the back of their heads? :p

By the way, who was the owner of the handcuffs and the whip? :D :D

I have noticed that from the driving, you think they are not watching and that is why they have just cut-you-up. But they are very quick to move out of the way when you lose your cool and try to ram them.

Yes the handcuffs...well.. I get that carried away watching the screen..it was only when they asked whose was this bag...I had forgotten I had packed them:o

I sopke to my contacts at Cabin Safety in the CAA and there is no legislation in force preventing the carrying of digital cameras inside aircraft cabins. I have also spoken to a friend in the Italian Police and he is not aware of anything unusual, although he is going to ask his colleagues who are based at Pescara airport.

Over the past 8 years travelling with Ryanair I have noticed that different airports throughout Italy tend do their own thing as far as regs ae concerned.

I am recently back from Italy with a portable DVD and digital camera in hand luggage.........No problems.

I did buy a lighter case yesterday with 'La Ryan' putting more emphasis on checked in luggage.....and.... I needed one too!!

I have travelled with this carrier a number of times and I must say I have always found them to be very accommodating.
