3549 good maps - 1:50,000

Hi,

Anyone else having trouble getting decent maps of Italy?

I'm trying to get some topographic maps at a large scale (1:50,000 or even 1:25,000) and although they're all "in print" none of the stores I've approached can get them.

I see you can get them direct from the Istituto Geografico Militare (Italian Ordnance Survey) but they don't like to deliver out of Italy.

Anyone with better experiences?

The maps I want are for the south (Salerno, Cilento) it looks like maps for areas in the north might be easier to get?

Those "military" maps are seriously out of date. The best source (and they are good) for 1:50,000 is a company called Kompass - based (as I recall) in Bolzano, and obtainable in London (to order) at some fancy map shop near Covent Garden: the coverage is by no means complete, (tell me which area you need one for and I'll have a look at the back of one of mine)...........but having said that, Google have basically done it all for the Italian peninsular, have a look at the member's map!!

Sorry - just read your post properly - Kompass do not seem to go very far south, but try

ane perhaps you will be able to find an ISBN number for something useful, which you could order outside Italy!

Kompass are great but they only cover the territory coveted by Austria :D

We have a stack of 1:50000 maps that we use regularly for walking and find them excellent. I don't know if it's a regional thing but ours are published by Edizioni Multigraphic Srl, Via A Corelli 55, 50127 Firenze, Tel 0554 12908, fax 0554 35274. I note it says below, "dai tipi dell'instituto geografico militare" and were drawn up in 1960! But in all the years we've followed them (15+ now) the footpaths haven't changed. We buy ours from local newsagents but surely the famous map shop, what is, Stanfords(?) in London would have them too? V
