Hi Jakie i you can have a look at this tread http://www.italymag.co.uk/forums/general-chat-about-italy-italy-magazine-forums/670-vacationing-abruzzo.html?highlight=beach+abruzzo
In the pescara montesilvano area the majority of the beaches are private and can get quite busy july-aug.
torre di cerrano in pineto offers a vast free beach with pineta where you can have your lunch.
In Ortona the coastline is more rocky but offers a more tranquil and secluded place, not many facility thought
Depending on what you are looking for there are for all ages, times and wallets ….
Silvi Marina

Silvi Marina is a beautiful beach and is one of the most famous between Teramo and Pescara. The sand is pale gold and very fine, the water is wonderful, but it's a bit regimented with all the ombrelloni and deck chairs in perfectly straight lines, which is how you can tell it is a "private" beach.

Last year costs were about 10 euros a day, I think, but it's all too civilised for me and so we sometimes went to the beach much later in the evening. Once we stayed all night, until sunrise. Very beautiful and free! :D
I think they also grow liquorice near Silvi.

I've tried the liquorice from Silvi it is really nice. I also tried the liquorice root from here, which I used to eat about 30 years ago. It is an aquired taste, maybe good for those who need to give up smoking, but as a non smoker what do I know?

Where has John gone? Has he finished on the forum?
If he has I bet he can't resist a sneeky look from time to time.
I shall actually miss his contribution:confused:

Yes, John has gone, there is a post from him, giving his reasons. I am sure he pops in and out though and yes I miss his contribution too.

My ideal beach is one that is off the well trodden way, a sandy cove with hills / cliffs behind, clear water (good for snorkelling) etc. The beaches I've seen so far seem to be the long strip of sand with rows of chairs and brollies, not really my bag...
From the guide books it seems I need to head south towards Vasto. Anyone know the area and the inside knowledge of quiet beaches (although if you do you probably don't want to tell everyone!)? There's only a few of us here, we'll keep it to ourselves...
So why did.....John leave....? Wasn't he the chap..... who did this.... a lot...?
But always very.....knowledgeable. Where's the post giving....his reasons?

I’ve been to Vasto many time, we have always used the private beaches, very clean and nice sandy beaches, small boats for hire.
My girls loved the water park in Vasto, called Aqualand, no rides but there is a pool with a wave machine lots of loud music, dancing and games.

not all of it is a private beach though? we went there today and north of the camping site of Silvi Marina there's a 'free' area (near Torre di Cerrano) - unless that's already part of Pineto. Lovely breeze today, great day out! In high summer I'd definitely go somewhere with shady areas, such as Pineto with its pines and benches/picnic areas. Other than that, I've also tried Pescara (not all that imho...) and Francavilla (rather nice, but very much geared towards tourism).

We are just back from Abruzzo - Marina San Vito which is just south of Francaville al Mare I think and 39 km north of Vasto. The beach at Marina San Vito is lovely and clean and has a blue flag or whatever the clean beach thing is. It gets cleaned daily by a man on a tractor. There's a pier lined with ancient fishing platforms called trabocchi which are beautiful to look at, and there are a couple of bars by the beach so you don't need to go far for refreshments/toilets. The beach is free but I think if you need chairs etc you would have to pay something. The water is lovely and shallow and very safe for kids. About a hundred meters along is a nice pebbly beach where the locals fish. Its pretty too but not very comfy to lie on. Highly recommend San Vito - very friendly and the old town is beauitful.
Hi Jackie
I don't know which part of Abruzzo you are looking into, our closest beach is at Francavilla al mare which is on the southern end of Pescara there is more or less a continuous sandy beach all the way north thro Pescara to Silva Marina, There are lots of private beaches (costs I don't know), there are also lots of areas where you don't pay. plenty of bars /restaurants especially north of the port in Pescara.
There are also beaches south of Ortona which are bit more rocky, just drive down the coast road and enjoy the views down thro Vasto etc.
Have'nt got too much info as we have'nt visited too many yet (too buzy)
