9342 name your own price for a hotel stay

it covers a couple of websites where you can specify a city/area, class of hotel, # of people, room types etc. - and also the price you are willing to pay for the room(s). It then matches you up with any suitable hotels with availability who are willing to accept the price you offer.

Haven't tried it myself, but thought it may be of interest to some brave souls out there who don't obsess over the specifics of the hotel before booking (you don't get told the name of the hotel until you book, though they must be of the star rating you requested - or better, and in the right area of the city).

sorry pigro have not yet figured out how to thank you on my controls (not technically minded at all) so thanks for that I have never heard of it before but will definately try it as I love a good bargain and one oF my biggest bugbears is the differing prices of hotels rooms and how much you can get ripped off by them

I've never used it myself but I know people who have - a colleague at work seems to get good deals through it but then she often travels to cities which are not touristy - not sure whether you get a good deal in high season somewhere like Rome!

I must admit that I would probably not use this service myself - I've seen too many hotels with a 4* rating that feel like 2.5* to me (and occasionally vice versa ... some of my fave hotels are rated 3* but deliver 4* experience).

On a similar theme, I [B][I]have[/I][/B] used lastminute.com's "Top Secret" thing in the past - where they offer an unnamed hotel at a deep discount and only reveal its ID once you've booked.

In that case you could sometimes get round it by looking at the lastminute.com description of the hotel and cutting & pasting a fairly unique sounding bit of the text into google ... the blurb is occasionally lifted straight from the hotels own website so with a bit of if luck, you could identify the place before booking.
