The ferries run by Caronte from Messina into Villa San Giovanni (just north of Reggio Calabria) run every 20minutes 24h. Enough just to turn up, they don't take bookings. The trip takes about 20 minutes, and the 1 km route from Villa S G onto the motorway is easy in Calabria. (I can't say the same about finding the ferry terminal in Messina....!)

On the Italian mainland you can buy tickets on the motorway service stations, check if you can do the same in Sicily, when we used it the parking and queues for buying tickets at the ferry terminal were terrible.
The ticket office is situated so that anyone buying tickets park and obstruct those with pre bought tickets.
The cost was about E38 for a week return.
Hi,
I think booking tickets in advance always great, its make tension free. And of course cross channel ferry travel gives excellent experience.
Cheers
no point in bothering as there is no comparison with cross channel ferries more like getting a bus for one stop, you just drive off the motorway into the port buy the ticket and drive onto the open ended ferry 15 mins later you're driving off there really is no "trip involved in fact as the ferry companies are several you drive to the one which has fewest cars.suppose you bought for example in advance tickets from italian railways ferry got to the port and found they were on strike you'd have to change ferry company anyway...don't bother i do this at least once a year.
