3570 Surnames

In Italy, but all around the world I suppose, there are some surnames that typical of a specific area.
Here some of the funniest and typical of the Macerata zone:
Attaccalite: "quarrel starter" a surname that fits for some of our forum members ;)
Mangiaterra or Magnaterra: "land\soil eater", a partially pejorative for "peasant"
Capodaglio: "garlic head"
Picciafuoco: "fire lighter", but it might means the same as Attaccalite
Pigliapoco: "take little"
Magnalbò: "eat the cow"

Hey, new titles for forum members.....I was getting bored with pleb, horse & doctor ;)

The son of the family we brought our Trullo from doesn't stop talking, even though we understand very little. On one occasion we were using our Italian/English dictionary to help each other, he grabbed the dictionary, killing himself laughing then showed us what their family name means. Colloqui: "talks" :D

I remember being very pleased to be introduced to a Sig. Mangiavacche - his ancient family must have had the same tastes as your Sig. Magnalbo!!

In England, there was a cartoon character called "Desperate Dan" - who ate "Cow Pie" with a whole cow inside the pie - and when I hear one of these names I always think of that character...

How about my personal favourites:
'Paccapelo' - split the hair
'Ficosecco' - dry fig
'Cantalamessa' - sing the mass
'Pelacani' - dog-peeler!
And many many more ... :p
