The article is in Italian but easy to get the gist of it. When we were in Venice during January 2008 the line was just opened. It was clear that the exclusive, Ventians only Vaporetto system, supposedly demanded by Venetians, was an idea that was next to impossible to put into practice.

There is an interesting comment in that story (from a Venetian commuter). He doesn't have a difficulty with 'tourists' on the vaporetti if they would only take off their backpacks and put them on the floor.

I find that tourists wearing backpacks at airports are a complete nightmare - it must be even worse on a crowded ferry.

So perhaps another reminder that it is only polite when in Venice to do as the Venetians, (or use the left luggage facilities at the train station to safely leave the backpack and free yourself of that encumbrance).

Having been sent flying through the air by a back pack on a moving back-packers back...I totally agree with you Charles.
