The youngest daughter of ferocious Cosa Nostra superboss Toto' 'The Beast' Riina was escorted down the aisle by her brother on Wednesday at her wedding in the Sicilian town of Corleone.
Lucia Riina, 28, married salesman Vincenzo Bellomo, 34, in the town's Immaculata church in front of 100 invited guests, journalists and curious tourists.
Giuseppe, 30, gave his sister away as the only male member of the family not currently behind bars, having recently finished serving a term for mafia association.
His elder brother Giovanni is serving two life sentences for murder and their father has been in jail since 1993.
Priest Giuseppe Gentile appealed to journalists to leave the church before the service began.
''Lucia is suffering inside (at the absence of her father and brother) and your presence does nothing but remind her of it,'' he said.
''This young girl has chosen to get married in public, out in the open, which in itself is an important step. Don't make the children pay for crimes they did not commit,'' the parish priest added.
Wedding guests read out Bible passages from the Song of Songs and the Gospel of Matthew during the service, which closed with Schubert's Ave Maria.
Lucia's mother, Ninetta Bagarella, who is also the sister of jailed Mafia boss Leoluca Bagarella, wore black and carried her daughter's white veil, giving journalists short shrift as she left the church.
''What are you doing here today? For us this is a day of celebration. There's nothing to see, we don't see the point of your melodrama,'' she said.
Corleone Mayor Antonio Iannazzo stressed that the newly-weds had ''never been in trouble'' and should be treated with respect.
''Lucia Riina is a normal citizen, even if it can't be denied that she has a distinctive surname. She announced the wedding to the city council in accordance with the law and has made a private choice for love,'' he said.
In a strange coincidence, the name of Lucia's new husband is the same as that used by her father as a false identity when he was in hiding.
On the day of his arrest Riina was found in possession of an identity card for a Vincenzo Bellomo from Mazara del Vallo near Trapani.
In May Italy's supreme court ruled that 78-year-old Riina, who is serving 12 life sentences, must remain under a high-security prison regime because he is still dangerous despite his age and ill-health.
The mobster has had three heart bypasses and is said to be suffering from back and thyroid problems as well as suspected prostate cancer.
Turning down requests for the ailing boss to be granted house arrest or placed under normal incarceration, the high court said he remained a ''threat and danger to society''.
Until his arrest in 1993, Riina was the Mafia's leading don.
He was convicted of a range of crimes including ordering the car-bombings that killed anti-Mob magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in 1992.
