If you’re walking around the Florence’s Baptistery and you see colorful, monumental scarves hanging down each side of the iconic building, it is not an original type of scaffolding! The installation is actually part of the big fashion event “Firenze Hometown of Fashion”, held in mid-June alongside the annual menswear event Pitti Uomo, taking place June 17-20.
All eight sides of the early medieval building will be “dressed” by the signature scarves of Florentine native Emilio Pucci, the fashion designer known for his geometric prints in a kaleidoscope of bright colors.
At the moment, only the apse is covered with Pucci’s 1957 scarf known as “Baptistery Foulard” because the patterns are meant to resemble the Baptistery. The other sides will be covered during the days of the event, which celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Florence's Center for Italian Fashion. The entire installation will measure 21,500 square feet.
Italy’s prime minister Matteo Renzi, former mayor of Florence, will inaugurate the 85th edition of Pitti Uomo inside Palazzo Vecchio on June 17.
