Looking at it from the outside, massive and tall, projecting the most powerful light beam in the world, you could not imagine the Victory Lighthouse in Trieste produces that light beam with a tiny four-centimeter light bulb, as thin as a finger. And yet it does, making the light visible more than 35 miles away.
The Victory Lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria) reopened to the public last month. Overlooking Trieste, it was built in 1927, to honor the fallen at sea during World War I.
With its height of 223 feet (68 m), it is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world.
The 1,000-watt light bulb produces a light intensity equal to that of 1,500,000 candles. The light bulb is placed inside an optical instrument, a rotating structure which increases the power of the light bulb tenfold.
The Victory Lighthouse will be open weekend afternoons until the second Sunday of October, when the Barcolana regatta event takes place in the Gulf of Trieste.
Reaching the top requires climbing 285 steps, but it’s worth the view!
