Cancelling a Eurotunnel Booking
I have had to cancel a return trip on Eurotunnel [Car + 2 + Dog], as I have to go into hospital for an op.
The booking was 'non-refundable'.

I thought this had disappeared in the new tax system, but my Comune website says the first payment for 2014 is due by 16th June
Looks like the days of the easy/cheap trip to italy through Switzerland are numbered.
Apparently, the Swiss government has decided to raise the cost of the vignette to 100 Swiss Francs for 2015.
Petrol prices in France are now comparable with the UK, except on the French Autoroutes.
For a change this year we drove down to Italy via Besancon [avoiding most tolls by taking some good french non-motorways.]

2 hrs after writing this my Comune newsletter informed me that my Bank, BNP, is closing/has closed my Branch - along with 299 others .

Can you get an Italian neighbour to buy a cheap pay as you go mobile for you?
Until you get to Italy, they will need to forward any messages to you, or they could send you the SIM card to you.
(I have an Italian bank account, so pay by Direct Debit - but SEN do send me me regular bills in the UK, so I know what is being paid)
Not sure what the problem with UK lighting in Italy is.
Suppose there could be a problem with earthing in really old installations, but that's the only possible problem that I can think of.
One suggestion though - I found it very difficult to find bayonet fitting light bulbs, so buy fittings with the screw fittings. (And takes LED bulbs with you as they use so much less power -- my place only has a 3kW supply, so having lots of non-LED bulbs on can take up a fair bit of the supply.)
I would say, however, that you will get a really good choice of light fittings in Italy

Following on from Modicasa and Ugo's comments - it would appear you really only have two options for taking your fiance's name.
1. Marry him in Ireland
2. Change your surname to match his before you marry him in Italy.

My Italian bank has emailed me today confirming payment made.
Hopefully I'll be over there before the next one in June.
I'm lucky, the Comune sends me the F24 by email, so I just sign it and email it to my Italian bank for payment.
Remember, (assuming you are from the UK) that if you are out if the UK for more than 6 months (continuous), you (in theory,) lose the right to NHS services when you return. And any travel insurance and car insurance is similarly time limited
Back in the early 2000's, I bought my house in Italy. We decided it was easier for me to be the sole purchaser, although both my wife and I attended the signing at the Notary's.
He was OK with her not being a purchaser, but asked that my wife countersign each page of the documentation to indicate her agreement with me being sole owner.
