I am Italian-American, eligible for dual citizenship under jure sanguinis. I am considering taking steps to moving to Italy, as I have famiy throughout the country.
Do you mind letting us know the bank you found that accepted an account? I'll be moving in October, and while I'm a dual citizen, I'd like to start somewhere where I have a better chance at avoiding issues. Thanks!
I'm almost certainly going to start in Rome, partly because I have a friend (my best friend, actually, of 18 years) who lives there but also because Rome enjoys nearly year-round tourism. I am also considering Bologna, but perhaps after a year or two. Thank you for your offer to send info!
You're not wrong! I'd be loath to renounce either citizenship, and am hopeful that because I am not high-income (though I'd of course love to be!), it may be a bit more straightforward. Only time will tell, I'll update when I get advice from my own accountants (fortunate to have an Italian uncle who is one as well as my U.S. accountant).
I'm definitely interested in learning more about this topic. I would expect that investing in an experienced accountant/tax attorney would be the smartest first move with the new regulations.
Thank you for your reply! I've worked in hospitality for many years, so hospitality/tourism is where I feel I'd have the best opportunity for work. I realize the economy in Italy is not in good shape, but that particular sector seems to be doing well so I'm hoping it won't take too long to find something! My aim is to move there in the next 8-10 months, so that I have savings to cover me until I get somewhat established.
