There are questions for you to answer, which will determine if, indeed, you are eligible to apply. The process for me was actually quite smooth, but I have heard it doesn't always go as quickly. You don't need an attorney. Your Italian consulate has all the information you need. I did mine on my own, and it isn't that difficult.
