English speaking communities to live in Italy.I've been reading many posts here and it seams to me that the general trend for summer homes or retirement places to live is in Tuscany.

I would agree with all the replies regarding living in, or having a holiday home in Abruzzo. My concern is that it is not as accessible than the other popular points in Italy. The roads leading there are fewer and more constrictive; as far as I know there are only regional trains that leave from Naples and Rome to Abruzzo. They tend to be slow with fewer lines. Far from the main airports...But if one wants seclusion, privacy, unspoilt, clean air than its  great. BTW, Molise is even more remote, just as clean and beautiful and cheaper, with major bargains.

You probably can for that price in Molise but it might leave you desiring for more soon after. The homes for that price usually need some upgrading, renos, good appliances so that you can live comfortably and healthy. Winters are also cold and snowy on those mountain villages in Molise. You'll need a good heating system. I know for a fact that there are definitely hundreds of cheap vacant homes in the villages waited to be lived. Some of them have owners that ask for too much and therefore don't sell for a long time. Annual Property tax is very little to nothing on homes that are old and require upgrades. There are also many places at low cost in abbruzzo puglia, Calabria, just depends what kind of vibe you like. If you plan on giving it to kids or other family as an inheritance then make sure their names are also on the purchase agreement too as part ownership. Otherwise you'll have to transfer the ownership to them when the time comes for about 5K. But Sounds fun overall.

This is a great lead and information to go off of! It looks like a classic Italian town and a local train station makes things better. Not far from Pisa, Florence, Genoa, coast, etc. Thanks and please share any other tips. !

This sounds like a great story! Thanks for sharing. It's true that the central homes ( perhaps all) should be seismically reinforced . I worry about that - the older homes or cassette that are along the appenines. Perhaps some great prices but some special considerations at the same time. I presume you are closer to the south-west end of Le Marche? The prices are good now, with good bargaining. I'm not ready to purchase yet but just to my homework. I've been told prices are steady and will stay relatively low for a long time still. Reasons are the EU dept crisis is still looming, economy isn't picking up, fewer people to buying, hard for locals to get mortgage, etcmind you it's amazing how different it is from region to region.Good luck on the restoration and please share how it all went!

I guess that's a huge question. 5-7 years? That's a surprise. I'm sure there are some bad experiences in the lot, like in most real estate purchases. It's possible they waited after 5years so they wouldn't get dinged from capital gains tax. Or they had their fun and moved on! thanks for your insight

The only public transportation that I've seen in Abbruzo and Molise is a regional train that starts from Rome or Naples and stops at many villages in between before hitting the regions capital. What could be a 2-3 hour direct train ride takes 5 hours. Then there could be a mountainous bus or drive commute to your final destination. For me, that's too inconvenient to get in and out - but not necessarily a deal breaker. There may be more options in Abruzzo but probably  similar.

Thanks Ugo. Umbria does look nice too. Many smaller villages to pick out. I like how it's central to everything. So how do you arrive there? Rome to the Umbria airport (mabye in Perugia?)then bus ! Taxi to your house? Is it convenient?

Thanks for the info Steve. I agree , building connections for the management of a holiday home are important, year round. Which is one of the reasons to settle in community with other English people. Mind you, over time I guess , more and more Italian friends and connections can be established.Question: what do you mean by "twee"?i have family in Molise, close enough and friendly. I've visited there about 7 times.  I'm sure I'll be going back. It's a nice mountainous place with nice villages, great food, great coffe, good art, friendly people but it really shines in the summer time only. Other times of the year it is rather vacant, quiet, colder from altitude and possibly boring. When it comes to investing big bucks into a holiday home over there I tend to hesitate. Probably because I would spend most of my time travelling to other hotspots in Italy where the interest lies. Sure a single home can cost a fraction of the cost but it is a rather remote area and a 3 hour drive to Fiumacino, and 2 hours to Naples. Nothing substantial in between except forest. Train rides are slow and regionale and take even longer. So the convenience of a faster arrival from Canada is not there (8 hour flight, 5 hour train, get picked up at station, etc) Im aiming for a faster arrival time and more convenient if possible.my idea is to have a holiday home in a region with more interest, activity, safe and Italian, then possibly leverage it out to Molise friends. I could always visit the Molise area and have accommodations for a short visit laid out.thinking out loud here, but trying to figure out a game plan.
