I thought it is about time that i said hello, i have been nosing at all the topics/posts on here and for a short time on the old site. I find it all very interesting and entertaining there are some very informative intelligent members.
if you are through tunnel by 6am you will be at Mulhouse by lunchtime about 7hrs drive , its about 4hrs from Mulhouse to get through switzerland with no major hold ups
We booked with auto europe last summer at pescara but went to wrong kiosk auto europa, we still filled in forms and took the keys packed bags into car and was just about to leave the car park when the girl came running up to us to explain we should have been with auto europe it was funny at the time but wouldnt have been if we had left the car park and drove to our house.
A history group would be a good idea as i have a badge with G.I.L and a large M above it. Its from a box of bits and pieces from my mums uncle who went down in 1943 on the HMS Penelope of the coast of North Africa it seems the badge would be fastened to a hat probably a fez. On the reverse of the badge is some writing ' commando generale' ' modelo depositato' and an address in Firenze i think. I have looked into it and it seems it was a party of young fascists set up n 1937 i guess the large M is for mussolilni but there is a date on the badge which predates 1937 it says R.D.L. 7-11-1925. If anybody has any more info regarding this party G.I.L. i would be very grateful. Sadly how my great uncle came by it will always be a mystery.
Angie and Robert it is there i just put in the search tom carver where the hell have you been its £10.19 it really is a fantastic book i enjoyed it so much i emailed tom carver and told him so and he sent a very nice reply, he is bbc correspondent in washington i think. The journey starts in Fontanellato and winds its way through the Appenines, Gran Sasso, La Maiella and finishes at Atessa
I just read a book called Where The Hell Have You Been - its a great story about a man who was captured in North Africa and sent to a POW camp in Northern Italy and its about his journey south after escaping to rejoin the allies. Its a great story anyway but when you hear of the villages on his journey especially in Abruzzo it gives it a special edge as i and am sure most of you know them. Its by Tom Carver and its about his Father who was Montys stepson. It is beautifully written even if you are not into WW11 history
