Giacomina,Spello is, geographically, a good central location for exploring the area. If you were traveling by auto, I think it would be perfect (but would still recommend a weekend or so in Perugia). With public transportation though, travel times and numbers of transfers, etc. may be longer and more complex from Spello than the larger hubs like Perugia. really a matter of your preference for activities at the end of the day- small town vs. university night life of Perugia. In any case, I know you will enjoy the experience.
Giacomina,In several trips to Umbria, I fell in love with Perugia- big city, small town feel, university life plus history, some amazing views as well as (most important) some great local cuisine. Assisi is a must see for the Basilica and the crypt of St. Francis. Spello, Gubbio, Montefalco,Spoleto are all wonderful. As with all excursions to Italy, I always recommend research into events, festivals, etc. to enhance the experience and provide opportunities to interact with locals.
