Having joined a few weeks ago and been surfing around the site, I thought it appropriate to introduce myself. My wife and I are moving to Naples next Mar. Our move sometimes fill us with trepidation and at the same time excitement. For example,
You passed your driving test on a car before 1 Jan 97. At that time, passing a car test allowed you to tow a trailer E, drive a minibus D1, and drive a small truck between 3.5t and 7.5t - C1. If you took your licence today, you would only get B and the other categories would need additional training and tests. In UK, the 'grandfather' rights allow you to continue to have these categories. I do not know the Italian licence rules and it possible you will lose these categories and entitlements. Although not strictly legal, it is not uncommon to put your licence at a family member address.
The website says the route was stopped on 31 Oct 10. Interestingly, the route from Liverpool to Naples is now only availbe from 28 Mar 11. It seems that flying to the north of UK is getting harder.
Perhaps shops are using up their stock or perhaps it is the Neapolitan way of things. But, down here in Naples, bags are (so far) very much still available in the shops I have been to over the last couple of days.
It is our first winter here and we are advised that mattresses get thrown from the windows in downtown Naples on New Year's eve. We are heading down to the city centre with a bunch of other Brits to enjoy the ambience (and possibly the mattress throwing).
Well, it passes reasonably close to where we live just north of Naples in 2011. My wife went this year, but sadly I could not get the day off work. She tells me that it does not have the same cavalcade that the TdF has. The Tour is an impressive beast that takes ages to pass. We watched the tour on the slopes of Ventoux a couple of years ago - an excellent day out.
Sadly, this offer is about one year too early for my plans. We have been considering setting up a cycling holiday company in central Italy and think the Marche is probably the best option. But, we are still at the fact finding stage and had intended that if we made a move it would be in 2012.
We did a 5 day weekend in Oct to look around and get some fact finding before we move out in Mar. The city was as you described, but we enjoyed our short trip. We will be renting a villa to the north and everythng seems to be working out. We are both really looking forward to it.

Get an account with Astrill and you should be able to watch on your computer - as long as connection is a decent speed.
