3433 Umbrian restaurant

I found an excellent restaurant in the hill town of Panicale (just south of Lake Trasimeno) called Lillo Tatini, in the main town square. The food is gorgeous and they serve Umbrian specialties such as wild boar, fish from the lake and all things truffle related. It is a small restaurant so you do need to book ahead, tel is 075 837771. Buon appetito!

Umbertide doesn't generally get the thumbs up in many guide books, but take the road from Umbertide towards Cortona along the Niccone Valley and within 6 kms there are 3 great restaurants:
in Niccone itself, Locanda di Nonna Gelsa (closed Tuesdays) 075 9410699
In Molino Vitelli, I Girasole di S.Andrea, wine & oil tasting plus good food 075 9410837.....
and best of all, just outside Spedalicchio on the road going towards Bastia Creti is Agriturismo Calagrana. This has recently been opened by 2 couples (Italian) who had Il Pepe Nero restaurant in London. The food is FANTASTIC and reasonably priced. Go for supper, book a room and drive home in the morning. 075 9410865 or 333 7328211 and speak to Patrick (he's Italian I promise you!)

yes it is lovely restuarant but try the place very near called Massollino, superb food and atmosphere and a wine cellar to die for!......thats it! you've really done it now!.....i'm just gonna have to find a flight and get back out there asap!....my bellies are rumbling already!!

There are quite a number of very good restaurants in Umbria but the one that my wife and I found outstanding last Xmas was Redibis in Bevagna, in what was part of the Roman amphitheatre. Bevagna is near Foligno. Elegant ambience, wonderful food, faultless presentation, attentive service. We enjoyed their 7 course Xmas day lunch...and all that for euro 40 (not including wine) per person.

In Todi ,where we have an apartment, you can't go past Pane e Vino. Three course meal , 20 euro per person. The Umbria restaurant also in Todi is more expensive, the food is not that much better than Pane e Vino, it's more expensive (say, 40 euro) but it has a great atmosphere particularly in winter when steaks etc are cooked at the huge fireplace. In summer Umbria restaurant has available for its clientele a large terrace with views over the countryside below.

Must also mention the restaurant at the Hotel Fonte Cesia, in the centro storico of Todi. Friendly service and very good Umbrian cuisine. The hotel and restaurant may look expensive...but its prices are not.

I absolutely agree with all you say about the Todi restuarants, Beppe. Haven't tried Redibis in Bevagna yet (its always looked a bit too 'precious' for us), but we certainly will now you've recommended it. Thanks!

Our two favourite restaurants are actually quite close to one another.

My long-time favourite is Il Rusticello at Deruta. Come off at the nord (north) exit on the E45 and its on the valley side clearly signposted.

Number two is a recent find and called Antico Forziere, coming off the E45 a little further south at Casalina and it is on the hill side, again clearly marked.

Neither are cheap, but the best restaurants shouldn't be.

We have put a list of the best restaurants found so far in Umbria on our website.

Masolino (doesn't look right with one "s" - but I think that is how it is spelt) is one of my favourites - especially mid winter when they have a wonderful log fire going...but (if you are back in Panicale) il Grotto di Boldrino has yet again changed hands and, I am told, is doing fabulous stuff in the kitchen. Nearby, in Paciano, La Loggetta has also changed hands - not as ambitious or exciting a menu, but still excellent and a place you can confidently take vegetarian visitors!

Neil298 please note it is quite a long drive from the Niccone valley to Panicale where Masolino is located. The Calagrana in the Niccone Valley does serve superb food but far nicer out of season...some types of holiday maker can ruin your evening in high summer! I Girisole nearby is very reasonable and never disappoints and they grow their own cows for beef as well as producing superb wines. Closed Mon. Heaven on earth, especially for vegetarians can be found along this stretch of road (S. Andrea di Sorbello) on a Sunday. Brunch, as much as you can eat for 12 euros. Le Capannine di Sommavilla. Dozens of organic home cooked dishes to select from. Tel 0575 638112 Closes in deep mid winter until spring so ring first.
