you could try Sun Selection - Travel Insurance Specialists - I have no experience of them personally, but they came up in a google search for "travel insurance for ex-pat British citizens". Assuming you & your partner are under 55 and have no pre-existign medical conditions, they'd offer anual multi-trip family cover to you as an Italian resident for £72 (for travel Europe) or £106 (worldwide). These are quotes obtained directly from their online tool, and they are freely available with no commitment & no need to specify any personal details other than age & country of residence. They also have pdf's for download with full policy details (excess, max cover etc).
I'm sure there are heaps more companies out there - and probably better prices, but that certainly gets you out of the €1000 ballpark anyway?

We do our annual holiday travel through Atlas and I noticed on the renewal flyer they listed expat insurance as an option. Don't know how it compares but we have always found their other policies competitive.

Isn't travel insurance very different to health insurance. When I take out travel insurance in the UK (and we always have annual policies) it is very clear that I am only covered for trips away from the UK that originate in the UK.
Have tried to obtained travel insurance in the past for family members already abroad with no luck because they won't backdate it and the trips have to start in the UK.
If you have travel insurance as an expat living in Italy I would check that this does actually cover you within Italy as I suspect it is literally what it says on the tin and is travel and not health insurance.

Yes, they are completely different, the original post asked for info re annual travel insurance. We are covered under the Italian health system so have no interest in health insurance. However, we did need travel insurance to cover us on trips back to UK and elsewhere. Our policy does provide cover for trips within Italy, ski-ing holidays and also business, which as my husband travels alot for work was important. I would never expect any travel policy to cover anything but emergency medical treatment overseas and repatriation if necessary.

If you are of a cetain age (50 plus I think) then Saga will insure your UK registered car for unlimited travel abroad - check the details!
We took out worldwide annual travel insurance with Cheap Annual Travel Insurance: Single Trip Travel Insurance: Car Breakdown: Computer - for 2 adults and 2 children the premium was 139 pounds, this included ski-ing cover. They are UK based but specialise in expat insurance. Setting it up was very easy - all internet/email based, we have not had to make a claim but they seemed efficient enough.
