I can't help about flights but as far as ferries

A random date in May, 1 foot passenger, E45 one way, 10hr trip.

If you're driving, a trip across the Messina straits costs about E40 return for a car + 4

we always go to sicily to see family by ship.
if you fly you end up having to hire a car to escape from them (family)
you also can't move around as you wish without car.
driving there takes forever and is lousy motorway.
flying is quick (though not so cheap) M. IN LAW cost us 67,00 euro one way to sicily from bologna with windjet but with taxes came quite a lot more.
so back to ship.
it's a lovely trip overnight you get there AFTER breakfast on ship at 8/8.30
so you don't waste anytime.BUT you would need a cabin ,they're clean and the showers are good you can get up to four in one,take the car with you.
the reson it's hard to get "a price" is because the prices are "constructed " and depend on the following:
number of passegers adult.
outward trip or return trip.
number of children under 12 years.
number of children over 12 years.
kind of cabin and number in cabin.
or "poltrona" airplane style seat instead of cabin (go for the cabin)
size of vehilcle.
dates of trip.
i calculated for you two adults + i car less than 4 metres +i1 child, in cabin,
return trip and on a route civitavecchia-palermo in early march it came on these parameters to Euro 719. total.
it sounds a lot but if you start adding up the flight costs + hire car etc not to mention inconvenience (see airports & luggage) there's not much difference.
there are dozens of web sites most simple some in english too you can compare prices and calculate prices without committment easily enough just digit - traghetti per la sicilia on pages in italian and they all come out.
p.s. it's the only way to go!!!!

we are a young family ( well the children are young!) of 4 and were advised against train for that reason. Civitivecchia would be best but i have found cheaper flights ( approx 50 euros return) worked out to be 270 with taxes.. i will double check again though, you have got me wondering that have read it wrong!

the family thing is correct i must admit, we are also visiting family and i am worried my youngest will have her cheeks ripped off! also the mother in law is talking about meeting us there from the uk.. :wideeyed:

so i will check car hire prices too. thanks fo the advise , didnt think about that one.

Is driving not an option? I appreciate it is difficult with young children.
we drove down from Pescara to Malta last Easter, I think it was about 7/8 hours to the ferry point at Messina.

We know someone who holidayed in Italy using the train from the UK and travelled down to Sicily. Said the service was excellent. We've also travelled across Italy by train with no complaints. Excellent, fast services.

I've travelled from Rome to Catania in Sicily by air with Air One at flyairone.com for about 58 Euros each way. There are other airlines like blu-express.com and meridiana.com or is it meridiana.it that also fly to Catania and Palermo.

I found the train from Rome to Catania was about the same price as a cheap flight.

There seem to be a couple of trains that do the journey from Rome to Palermo direct. One leaves about 8 on the morning and takes just under 11 hours, and the other, which leaves about 8 in the evening, is an overnight train with sleepers and couchettes taking about 12 hours.

Most other times you have to make 1 or 2 train changes
