Marina di Carrara is not that bad. There is a free beach right in front of the road coming from the highway. Quite easy to find a parking. See this video I have taken this summer (a lot of wind): [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRIWZIXOvqs]YouTube - Il mare a Marina di Carrara[/ame]
It is possible to take a bath in the Bagnone stream, on the way towards Corlaga, but it is quite small, very nice though.

Hi - try this link APT Massa-Carrara Agenzia per il Turismo | Organize your holiday to the Provincia's tourist info site. It gives detailed info on what each beach club offers and some seemed to include playgrounds. No pictures though sadly.
Happy dipping
Chris

When our young (5 y o) nephew came last summer we went to the beach at marinello di sarzana. I am not a beach person and hated it but others enjoyed it and there is a large area of public beach there. There is a great car park on the other side of the road under large pine trees in the shade. Even room for ball games etc. and only €3 all day (or €2 for half a day) My only reservation for you about a beach holiday at that time of the year would be the sun. OK morning and late afternoon but from about 11- 4 too much for youngsters. In land may be cooler!!

As you are heading for Bolzano, have you considered Lake Garda? At Riva there is a good clean beach (also at Torbole, I believe) and it should be cooler than the coasts in July.
Ronan,
there are others in the Lunigiana region who have children and may be able to give you more advice but what about Monterosso at Le Cinque Terre- there is a small beach there but parking can be difficult and you may not want to take the train with babies and all their equipment. There are also beaches at Bocca di Magra (nice flat front for pushchairs too) on the estuary of the Magra which is quick to reach, also at Lerici . Some of the beaches are pay beaches but there are some little bays over near Lerici which are free beaches but have showers, snack bar etc.
There is also the pool at Villafranca but that may not be open then.
