8733 Laughing All The Way To The Bank???

I was doing wee bit of spring cleaning today and found lots of Lire bank notes. Can they still be exchanged for euros at the banks in Italy and indeed here too in the UK???

Hi I think they have to be changed through Banca d'Italia as there was a time limit after they went out of use, it will probably be a long wait but ask at your bank am sure they will tell you how to go about it .

Could you please say where the find was made:

[*]under the mattress
[*]in a jar
[*]behind the fridge
[*]etc so that I can focus my own spring cleaning appropriately
I am "la giu" tomorrow, so will ask at my bank and let you know what they say. I imagine you will have to go to the Comune (accompanied by both parents and a judge) to get a form stamped which you will have to take to the tabachiera? where you'll need to buy a €0.68 bola, then go to the Post Office, beg, cry, smile & offer favours of a personal nature, then re-join at the correct queue! I suspect a visit to a Notaio may figure in the process somewhere too.

Or maybe it will be straight forward - either way, I'll let you know.

Very often it is not worth changing small amounts of obsolete currency, but many charities collect out of date currency and can then change it once they have sufficient to make it worth while.

My advice would be to find a charity, which does this and make a donation to a good cause.

Here is one which accepts foreign and obsolete currency.

Hi - just back from buying veg and quick chat at my bank. Chardonnay is spot on - old Lire notes have to be changed at branches of the Banca Italia - here's a list Banca d'Italia -

Apparently you have until 2012, that being 10 years after the euro was adopted in Italy.

Hope there's enough for a coffee.
