How about devising games for them at home? Treasure hunts are great. Hide stuff and give them maps (age related)..Game boys always good, to keep them quiet on journeys. Also the beach...but buying a large inflatable paddling pool always good idea..Also fabulous mountains near you as the air will be much cooler up there..just make sure you take plenty of water and wind proofs and of course maps, compass and guide books..
DVD's, videos and internet access always a good idea...

Hey Pilch. The children are 8 and 13, so paddling pools??? lol Also they are going to Italy so why encourage them to sit in front of a computer/screens which they probably do at home and which is so unhealthy as it becomes an addiction???

I recommended a paddling pool because at that time of the year, August, it will be scorching and everyone even thirteen year olds like to cool down. As for encouraging them to sit in front of a computer...you try entertaining kids for 24 hours a day...I bet every parent blesses computers, T.V's and game boys and wise parents know when to draw the line...and I know you spend a lot of time in front of your computer, dontcha Turtle? LOL !!!!!!! Seems to keep YOU off the streets.

The 8 year old would be fine with a paddling pool, after all it's water. Once the younger one is in it messing about I'm sure the older one will follow, I know I would if it was scorching hot.

Last year we have two sixteen year olds staying with us and they even bought their own paddling pool. We all had wonderful fun, even the dogs enjoyed it! It cost very little and they took it home with them so I’m thinking of getting one for us this year.:laughs:
It is so hot in August that I recommend you to take them to the beach at Lerici or Porto Venere. An excursion by train from La Spezia to the Cinque Terre should be interesting. Plenty of walking there, that would keep them busy for the whole day and they will be so tired at night that they will fall to sleep like little angels.....
