I am currently thinking of moving south to Lucca. Its only a idea at the moment and we may go somewhere different. I just thought I would look for a reality check.
1) Whats life in Lucca like? We are in our early 30's and very much into restaurants, bars and dancing.
2) Which are the best areas to be? That are outside the castle walls but close enough that you can walk/bike to the centre.
3) Any general Lucca advice would be much appreciated.
I have always loved visiting Lucca, but day trips in the summer do not reveal the realities of living in a place.

If you have to be outsidethe walls I would choose San Concordio as you will be near the St Peter's Gate and that takes you straight into the center of town. You will also have the railway station in the same area. You can walk or take a bike.
I cannot help you with your other question as we are not in your age group; however, there are plenty of restaurants and bars wherever you go.
Lucca is a great city.
