8791 Catteries In Umbria/tuscany

In December of last year we moved permanently to Umbria in Italy, with a microchipped, passported cat. However, we live in a very rural area - no neighbours to pop in easily to feed when we are away. I wonder if anyone is aware of any catterys in the area? My husband is currently working away from Italy and I need to be able to go over and stay with him occasionally. This was not planned and owning a cat is causing us a real problem.

The other alternative we have thought about is re-homing him however, again this is not England and I know it would not be easy. We could only re-home him if we were sure he was with really good caring owners.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated

Nicola

I suggest you ring around local vets who will know of "cat ladies" who take in homeless poodie kats. I was lucky eighteen months ago when I took my wee stray to a vet in Sulmona who in turn managed to get hold of the local one, albeit half an hour's drive away. She was lovely and although heart breaking, I had no qualms about handing Zucche over to her.

I also suspect a Forum member will take him in the end!!!

I have a cattery Home but I am over the hill from you in Emilia Romagna.
which is probably too far!

Hi, there is a vet in Castiglione del lago who boards cats albeit in smallish cages, she apparently lets them out (in turn) to run round the surgery when it is closed. She is a lovely lady and great cat lover, (I think she has about 10 of her own) your cat would certainly be very safe there.

sorry but that sounds awful "battery cattery"!

Thank you for your replies. 'HEREALREADY' your cattery seems ideal, But really is just too far, would be happy to drive for 1 hour, but to you is nearer 3 (I think).

I will have to keep on looking for a solution re Mr Rossi. He is a really lovely cat who was born on our roof (his mother was wild) when we lived in Rome on the Appia Antica 3 years ago. She tried here hardest to look after him but not really a good place to raise a kitten!! As you can imagine he eventually fell off the roof. We tried making another nest for him and his mother, but she persistently carried him back up onto the roof. So in the end we had to take him in. We then had to get him microchipped and passported in Rome, (a nightmare and really expensive) as my husband got a job away from Italy in Macedonia. At that time we also had another cat which we had brought over from England. Unfortunately he was killed on the roads.

We returned to Italy just before Christmas to our home with Mr Rossi. My husband has now got a year contract with the UN in Kosovo, not planned. I will remain here but need to be able to visit occasionally. Unless I can find a cattery I may have to consider re-homing. However, can only do that if I am absolutely sure he would go to the right home. I now everyone thinks their cat is wonderful, but he truly is a lovely cat, really, really affectionate and intelligent. Wondered about taking him back to England and re-homing there but seems a bit extreme.

Anyway thanks for all advice so far and if anyone can offer any other help re cattery or rehoming it would be appreciated Nicola in Umbria

I found this one, based in Rome though, Nicola - Seven Spirits Maine Coon Cats Cattery from Italy Maybe a wee bit spooky!!!

However I also put into Google - pensione gatti Toscana - pensione gatti Toscana - Google Search and pensione gatti Umbria pensione gatti Umbria - Google Search

I think you'll find a solution here. Buona fortuna, Keep us posted

Also I see if you type these same words into Pagine Gialle you will find some. - http://www.paginegialle.it

have you tried talking to your local vet. Ours in San Secondo, near Citta di Castello, was more than willing to look after our cats, obviously for a fee. I could give you her details if you're interested.

AndrewLing - that is a good idea and worth a try. Because we have only been here since just before Christmas have not needed to use a vet. We are near to Marsciano and do not mind driving if you recommend your vet.

Perhaps if you don't mind you could give me the address and tel no of your vet. Always good to have a recommendation.

Many thanks Nicola

try a dog kennel although they don't advertise (as Italian people don't bother with cats that much) it sometimes takes cats to rehome. I know the one i phoned helped me out with our cats. good luck.
